With these new Background cards, it feels like you could more easily use Magic cards as aids in a roleplaying game – or even as the basis of a whole new RPG. I’ll leave you guys to think about that one on your own time, and until then, there’s certainly a use for it in the right conventional Magic setting. Artifact decks are always popular and have gotten new dimensions recently, and it’s far from out of the question to turn Clan Crafter’s ability into some kind of an engine. This is especially true with the resiliency it has: remember that a Background functions much like a commander creature in a deck that’s using it with a “choose a background” legend.

Constructed: 1/5
Casual: 1/5 in “conventional” casual; it’s obviously better if you have a variant that uses a general (or house-rule it to say “legendary” instead, which makes it kind of really good)
Limited: 3/5
Multiplayer: 1/5 (with the same caveats as for Casual)
Commander [EDH]: 3/5

An artifact sacrifice outlet effect can be potent if you have the means to fuel it, and given the influx of artifact tokens in recent years (between Clues, Food, and Treasure/Gold), Clan Crafter may well have more than enough fuel to put on the fire. It’s a simple effect, but it’s an effective one in terms of being able to grind out advantage, and there definitely are plenty of commanders this will be well-suited to play along with. It’s functional in both the 99 and in the Commander slot, and while I think this isn’t anywhere close to Cultist of the Absolute, they do slot into different decks fundamentally, so there is that.

Constructed: 1
Casual: 1
Limited: 3.5 (you’ll want to pair this with a lot of artifact token generation)
Multiplayer: 1
Commander [EDH]: 4 (same deal, but artificer decks are definitely more part of the proceedings here)

Excellent card for artifact commander decks right from the get go it allows you to play blue in your deck and not have to have a commander that’s pretty great!  This is going to go in artifact heavy builds but there’s an assortment of things that you can add to this card to make it more impactful.  How about adding black for sacrifice triggers?  Red for some insane speed?  White because you feel like it?  There’s a lot that can be done but I would go with either a mono blue build or a red/blue build to focus on the artifacts and the speed at which you want to sacrifice them to buff up your commander!

Constructed: 1/5
Casual: 3/5
Limited: 4/5
Multiplayer: 4/5
Commander [EDH]: 4/5
