I’m sure Chaos monsters bring back lots of memories, so let’s look at the two main ones starting with Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning.

BLS – Envoy is a Level 8 LIGHT Warrior with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Very respectable stats for a Level 8, plus a good Type and Attribute combination of LIGHT/Warrior. So we see this cannot be Normal Summoned or Set and must first be Special Summoned from the hand by banishing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster from your graveyard, which is so easy to do in dedicated Chaos strategies. You got a choice between two effects once per turn you can make, the first banishing any monster on the field by giving up this card’s ability to attack that turn, and the second letting this attack again in a row after it destroys an opponent’s monster in battle. The first option is pretty nice to take care of something this can’t take care of in battle, or maybe you don’t want to destroy in battle instead. It does target, which is a bummer, but banishing is a great form of removal 9 times out of 10. The second effect to get 2 attacks potentially is great with 3000 ATK because it can run over almost anything and/or hit for some massive damage. It was great to combo with Armory Arm back in the day against 2 Attack Position monsters or anything in Attack Position followed by the opponent being open for a direct attack. BLS is still a strong boss monster, even to this day. It’s kind of insane to think this is a card that can exist at 3 and has for several years now, considering how broken it was to a point where it was banned for half a decade and limited for about 3/4ths of another decade after. It might not be as versatile as Chaos Dragon Levianeer, but he’s still a very strong card, unlike tomorrow.

Advanced Rating: 4/5

Art: 5/5 I do want an alternate art of this, but it will be hard to top how cool this does look.

Just wanted to mention I did get a (late) review up for yesterday!

I remember a number of years ago reviewing this card when it first came off the Ban List.  That’s actually one of the reviews I’m most fond of, I really liked that.  Sometimes you’re just really proud of what you write.  Being legal and Unlimited is probably something few, if any, of us ever saw coming for BLS.  Still as easy as ever to Summon, only needing the Grave removal of a Light and Dark Monster to Special Summon to your Field.  Double attacks (more and more common in the game, concurrent or not) as well as a removal (same as above) made this the bane of many players existence (and diabolical card to use) all in one.  Plus he benefits from not having been nerfed as there are certainly cards that outclass him these days in the game.  But I wouldn’t fault anyone who can fit one and has the Light/Dark to do so as long as you’re doing so because it fits and is smart, not just because you had the room.

Rating:  3.5/5

Art:  5/5  This is a really simple, but great picture.  The armor is everything, and it so looks like a star or some such is going nova or just has behind him.
