Hello Pojo Fans,

We’re taking a look at “Xyz Armor” this week on CoTD, starting off with Xyz Armor Torpedo

Rank 3, with an impressive 2500ATK, Torpedo had to have a drawback with that ATK, and while not attacking unless Torpedo has a material attached is bad, it’s not like Acid Golem where it can really do you harm. Detaching two to draw a card certainly means you will be without material, but a draw is a draw and likely will occur first before linking this monster away unless you equip it to something.

Speaking of that, it gives the monster it equips to some effects (of course). Monster negation of your opponent’s monsters while you attack is pretty good, as well as locking out all card effects until the Damage Step makes Torpedo a protection attachment for something of yours. Targeting protection if you attach Xyz Armor Torpedo to an Xyz, which you almost always will, so you’ll have an Xyz monster with targeting protection that locks out effects until the end of the Damage Step and negates monsters while you battle, pretty good.

You have to attach this as an Equip Spell and not as a Xyz Material to gain these effects, which is a major downer because this monster starts an Xyz climb up the ranks and would’ve been even better if it would give these effects as an Xyz Material. Nonetheless you can equip this in various ways using Spell/Trap cards like the one we review within the archetype this week. Full Armor Torpedo is best used for its draw ability and as the first rung to start your Xyz climb to higher Ranks, but if you are fully committed to the archetype and run the other forms you will climb into and the trap to equip it, then it’s a pretty good card because it will help protect whatever it attaches to and turn on effect(s).

They printed Shark’s Armored Xyz Spell recently after so many years and now we got a whole wave of support for it with Xyz Armor monsters, so we’ll look at them and go down the line starting with Xyz Armor Torpedo.

Torpedo is a Rank 3 WATER Warrior Xyz with 2500 ATK and 800 DEF. A good ATK stat for a Rank 3, WATER is good, and Warrior is always nice. Materials are any 2 Level 3 monsters, so it’s at least generic. It cannot attack unless it has material, since 2500 is abnormally high for a Rank 3 without some downside. You can detach 2 materials from this card to draw a card, which draw power is always good and it gets this out of materials before you rank it up into your bigger Armor monsters that want monsters with no material to go on top of usually. Hard once per turn on the draw effect, which I don’t think was necessary, but it doesn’t matter. A monster equipped with this monster gains the following effects where if the equipped monster battles, then until the end of the Damage Step your opponent cannot activate cards or effects and the effects of face-up monsters they control are negated, also if the equipped monster is an Xyz Monster, the opponent cannot target it with card effects. Of course this is meant to be equipped with the Armored Xyz cards, which it likely will be played to be summoned for its effect, have something put on top of it, and detach it to later be equipped with said Armored Xyz cards. Its fine for that purpose, but there’s a better Xyz Armor monster for this purpose as well, but this can be a fine starting piece if you can make Rank 3s.
