Volcanic Trooper – #LD10-EN019

If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 “Volcanic” card from your Deck to your hand, except “Volcanic Trooper”. You can discard 1 card; Special Summon 1 “Bomb Token” (Pyro/FIRE/Level 1/ATK 1000/DEF 1000) to your opponent’s field. Each time 1 is destroyed, its controller takes 500 damage. You can only use each effect of “Volcanic Trooper” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Volcanic Trooper begins our look at the Volcanic archetype this week, and somewhere Payne96 is happy.

Small Level 3 FIRE that is your Normal/Special Summon searcher for the Deck. This small Pyro monsters gets you any Volcanic card you want (minus your Blaze Accelerator cards), which is good enough to run three of it. Standard search effect, didn’t short them by making it only “when Normal Summoned”. Because Volcanics do a lot of discarding, it was safe to assume we’d see some discard effects on the new cards. For Trooper, discarding while its on the field produces a “Bomb Token” on your opponent’s side of the field. Small token, Level 1, nothing to fear. If it is destroyed you get to do some small 500LP damage. Volcanics try to make LP matter, even though they don’t until you get into the critical zone (less than 2000LP because most “Solemn” cards are useless then).

This is meant to act as further damage added onto when you are discarding Volcanic Shell and Volcanic Scattershot. Discarding with Blaze Accelerator, Blaze Accelerator Reload, and Volcanic Inferno. You replace monsters on your opponent’s side of the field with tokens to be destroyed to do more LP damage. Scattershot is meant to be the finishing blow though, as the two that get sent from the grave via the first one will clear your opponent’s field.

First card of the new support we are looking at and it’s pretty decent. Continues the LP damage theme Volcanics do while being an all-around search monster for the archetype to go alongside Volcanic Rocket.

After such a long wait for many, we finally got the legendary Volcanic support and we start with a new monster actually worth using a Normal Summon on: Volcanic Trooper.

Volcanic Trooper is a Level 3 FIRE Pyro with 1000 ATK and DEF. Stats are middling, FIRE is solid, and Pyro is getting good support that includes its own RotA. Anyways, Normal or Special Summon this to search for any Volcanic card from the Deck besides Volcanic Trooper. A standard Stratos for the archetype, only this can search for Spells and Traps, though we already got a way to set Traps from the Deck directly, so you’ll favor Monsters and Spells. Being able to get to Volcanic Rocket to search more Blaze Accelerators is good if you can summon it, you can get Volcanic Shell for more ammo, Volcanic Rimfire helps get more Volcanics in the graveyard, and Volcanic Scattershot is your in-archetype Raigeki you try to reuse over and over usually. Other effect lets you discard a card to summon a Bomb Token to the opponent’s field (Pyro/FIRE/Level 1/ATK 1000/DEF 1000) and the opponent takes 500 damage each time a Bomb Token is destroyed. It’s another way to get Shell or Rimfire in the graveyard for Volcanic names or Blaze Accelerator Reload to ensure you can Scattershot on the opponent’s turn. The Bomb Token isn’t really a threat, just something you could destroy turn 1 with a Blaze Accelerator. Hard once per turn on each effect is fine. Overall, Trooper is a good support card mainly for the search on summon that many archetypes love to have. The second effect has its uses, but it’s just a bonus at this point. Play 3 to maximize consistency in Volcanics.

Our Soulburning Volcano coverage continues with Axel’s long-overdue Volcanic support, starting with Volcanic Trooper, a level 3 FIRE Pyro monster, not unlike its Volcanic brethren. It’s easily searchable with the upcoming Bonfire and Hiita the Fire Channeler, but if you’re willing to use the Superheavy Samurai Engine, you can use Infernal Flame Banshee as well (not highly recommended due to Volcanic’s high Spell and Trap volume). With a middling 1000 for both attack and defense, Trooper isn’t the pinnacle of combat, but that’s to be expected for a low-level monster.

Trooper has two hard once per turn effects that are both very useful, a step in pointing Volcanic in the right direction. On being Normal or Special Summoned, Trooper lets you search any Volcanic card from your deck (oddly, not Blaze Accelerator cards, with a notable exception, though I guess that’s what Volcanic Rocket is for). Combined with its second effect, most of the time you’ll be searching tomorrow’s card, Volcanic Blaze Accelerator, but if you already have it in hand, you can just search whatever you need to match the situation, like Volcanic Shell for free discard fodder. Trooper’s second effect lets you discard any card to Special Summon a Bomb Token to your opponent’s field, a level 1 FIRE Pyro Normal monster with 1000 attack and defense, which burns your opponent for 500 LP if it’s destroyed. Konami has been increasingly designing cards that spawn monsters to your opponent’s field, preventing relatively common nuisances like Kashtira Fenrir, Evenly Matched, and Infinite Impermanence, though you’ll still want to destroy it with Volcanic Blaze Accelerator to kickstart your combos with Volcanic Rimfire. The burn is a nice bonus, and it’ll add up with all of the small burns you’ll be doing during your combos. Overall, a much needed combo starter for Volcanic; at the very least you’ll be running 3 copies and 3 copies of Bonfire.
