Hello Pojo Fans,

Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem is our Throwback Thursday choice for our Ancient Gear week and one of the possible Fusion Monsters that becomes more attainable with the new support.

Needing Ancient Gear Golem and two other Ancient Gear monsters isn’t a hard thing to come by, but getting that specific monster can be a frustration. Ancient Gear Catapult and Geartown can help you get to your named Ancient Gear, while Ancient Gear Workshop can add it back to the hand and Commander can send it to the grave. However you get it to your hand, you can use pretty much the fusion card of your choice to Fusion Summon this monster. Same inherited piercing and Spell/Trap protection until the end of the Damage Step, but with 4400ATK to back it up. Replacing itself with Ancient Gear Golem from the grave is a pretty good trade to keep a high ATK monster always on your side of the field.

No inherited protection other than in battle (carrying the theme of the archetype) isn’t what you like seeing on a big Fusion Monster. Chaos Ancient Gear Giant requires any four Ancient Gear monsters you may have and is unaffected by all Spell/Trap cards, also, it locks out monster effects until after the Battle Phase in addition to being able to attack all monsters and do piercing if any were in defense. You can Power Bond to double the ATK of UAGG or even Limiter Removal on top of that. It is a bulky attacker that didn’t require what it does now, but it can still be made rather easily in the archetype and Ancient Gear Fusion allows you to use AGG on the field and then monsters from the Deck.

Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem is a heavy-hitting machine, but it now lacks what its Chaos version has. Big ATK is good, but piercing isn’t what it used to be, and battle traps have been essentially power crept out of the game entirely. It gives you back an Ancient Gear Golem from your grave when destroyed, so Limiter Removal for massive, if not OTK damage, and if that doesn’t work you’ve got at least a backup plan.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us one of the big boss monsters for the Ancient Gear archetype, and the Fusion that mentions Golem so you can use it better with the new support: Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem.

Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem is a Level 10 EARTH Machine Fusion with 4400 ATK and 3400 DEF. Gigantic stats, and still an EARTH Machine. Fusion Materials are Ancient Gear Golem and any other 2 Ancient Gear monsters, so easy and thankfully isn’t just 3 Golems instead. It must be Fusion Summoned, similar to how regular Ancient Gear Golem cannot be Special Summoned. It does piercing, just like Ancient Gear Golem, so damage from this is unavoidable really. When it attacks, the opponent cannot activate Spells or Traps until the end of the Damage Step, which was better when Battle Traps were still relevant, but still a fine effect today against a last minute Forbidden Droplet. Finally, this thing being destroyed lets you revive Ancient Gear Golem from the grave, ignoring summoning conditions, since of course regularly Ancient Gear Golem can’t be Special Summoned. It’s a very simple monster that basically sums up Ancient Gear’s playstyle. Summon big monsters and do big damage, no matter the situation. With Ancient Gear Duel, summoning this alone should finish the game now in case you can’t summon Chaos Ancient Gear Giant, so it’s another OTK option you have now by itself technically.

Art: 4/5 Ancient Gear Golem becoming some sort of minotaur is actually somewhat cool.

Dr. Crowler’s secret weapon returns for this week’s Throwback Thursday: Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem, the former final boss of the Ancient Gear archetype, coming to reclaim its spot from Chaos Ancient Gear Giant. It’s a level 10 EARTH Machine Fusion monster, with a fairly hefty requirement of an Ancient Gear Golem and any two other Ancient Gear monsters (is it any wonder Ancient Gear Fusion is a semi-deck fuser?). As expected for this deck, Ultimate has a whopping 4400 attack and a still amazing 3400 defense, which certainly justifies its materials.

Like many odd GX Fusion monsters, Ultimate must be Fusion Summoned, though cheating it out is largely fruitless in modern Yugioh anyway. Ultimate fully represents Ancient Gear’s combat potential, as it inflicts piercing damage and prevents your opponent from activating Spells and Traps if it attacks. If you make it with Ancient Gear Duel, which you will be doing 99% of the time, it’ll also be unaffected by activated monster effects and can attack three times during the Battle Phase, which puts it about on par with Chaos Giant, and it’s arguably better against decks that don’t run backrow disruption. Ultimate’s final effect triggers if it’s destroyed in any way, letting you Special Summon an Ancient Gear Golem from your Graveyard (ignoring Summoning conditions, of course). It’s a neat last-ditch hail Mary effect if Ultimate ends up biting the dust, and in fringe scenarios you can even take advantage of it to get in another attack with that Golem, though I wouldn’t count on it to save you reliably. Previously, Ultimate was largely outclassed by Chaos Giant since it was only slightly easier to summon for a much weaker monster, though with Ancient Gear Duel (which again CANNOT summon Chaos Giant), it can reasonably compete with it. Overall, while still outdated as a monster, the new support fortunately gives it a place to shine in Ancient Gear.

+Incredible OTK potential
+Easier to summon than ever
-Lacks OTK power without Ancient Gear Duel’s bonus effects
-Still weak to backrow-based removal

Art: 3.5/5 A lot of crazy thought went into the design (centaur, Trojan horse, etc), though as a standalone card art I think it’s just okay.
