Tymna is one of the surprisingly many Theros-themed cards whose first appearance wasn’t in a Theros set. Like a lot of those cards, she not only uses abilities that weren’t emphasized in the actual Theros sets, but is also quite powerful. In her case, it mostly comes up in Commander and in a specific type of deck; fortunately, her color combination is good at generating enough tokens to hit three or so people at once, and partner means you can pair her with any other color if you so choose. It’s often a good choice to do so, as it might increase your strategy’s resilience, or just give you access to more things you want to draw. I know that partner is a polarizing mechanic in Commander, but I can’t fault cards like Tymna for giving this color combination a way to fight back against the sometimes-overwhelming card advantage that us Magic players just don’t seem to be able to resist.

Tymna, the Weaver became the stand-out card from the Commander 2016 new cards, a card that both underscores the strengths of Orzhov and the cards that pairs with it. If you have a lot of opponents, you can get a lot of card draw, and the life payment can be partly offset by Tymna’s lifelink (though she probably is uninterested in attacking). Partner is also a fun wrinkle; this was part of the four-color commander decks and a way to make for a four-color commander pairing without having to have a singular creature. There are lots of pairings that work with Tymna, but if you’re on board with just using her alone, you can use this as a strong, value-oriented commander option.

Constructed: 1.5 (only ever a bad Phyrexian Arena)
Casual: 4
Limited: N/A (has never been able to be drafted)
Multiplayer: 4.5
Commander [EDH]: 4.5
