Traptrix Rafflesia
Traptrix Rafflesia

Traptrix Rafflesia – #BOSH-EN099

2 Level 4 monsters – This card is unaffected by Trap effects while it has Xyz Material. “Traptrix” monsters you control, except “Traptrix Rafflesia”, cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. Your opponent cannot target “Traptrix” monsters you control, except “Traptrix Rafflesia”, with card effects. Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card and send 1 “Hole” Normal Trap Card that meets its activation conditions from your Deck to the GY; this effect becomes that Trap Card’s effect when that card is activated.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Traptrix Rafflesia is the Throwback Thursday choice and used to be a decent mainstay in Extra Decks.

Generic materials for a generic Xyz monster. Super strong defense for a Rank 4 and immunity against Trap cards while having a material made her a big wall to get over. Blanket destruction protection for all other Traptrix made it much harder for your opponent to counter when players would Normal Summon their Traptrix monsters and plus from their effects, especially when Special Summoning Myrmeleo and popping an opponent spell/trap. Deck thin ability for a material detachment, Rafflesia sends any of the “Hole” Normal traps you may run to the grave and you gain that effect. There were many “Hole” traps the archetype plays but the most universal is Bottomless Trap Hole, which could end up being a big plus if you chained it off a Pendulum Summon or something back in the day like Gladiator Beast Gyzarus. Within the archetype you aren’t short of Normal “Hole” trap cards to choose from, but outside the archetype you’re likely limited to Gravediggers Trap, Bottomless, Floodgate, Time-Space, and Treacherous Trap Hole. When Bottomless Trap was at three Rafflesia saw its most play and for obvious reasons.

With many of the Throwback Thursday choices, Rafflesia doesn’t see much play anymore as the game has changed over the years. A solid defense wall and worked well with the archetype as well as had a niche outside it.

We’ll use Throwback Thursday to build up tomorrow’s card this week by looking at old Traptrix Rafflesia.

Rafflesia is a Rank 4 EARTH Plant Xyz with 300 ATK and 2500 DEF. Strong DEF for Rank 4, EARTH is great, and Plant is pretty solid. It’s a generic Rank 4 that only needs 2 Level 4s, so that’s a plus already. It is unaffected by Trap effects while it has Xyz Material, plus Traptrix monsters you control cannot be destroyed by battle unless they’re named Traptrix Rafflesia, also they can only target Traptrix Rafflesia with card effects before targeting any other Traptrixes, so some good protection effects here. The last effect is a soft once per turn, and the lone effect you can activate, where you can detach a material as a Quick Effect when a Hole Normal Trap in the Deck meets its activation requirement to then send said Hole Trap from Deck to grave and replace this card’s effect with the sent Trap’s effect. Nice way to access your Trap Holes from the Deck like Bottomless, Floodgate, Network, Treacherous, etc. It’s nice to be able to access your Trap lineup at the ease of 2 Level 4s, and you still got the mystery of the opponent not knowing what potential Trap Holes you might have in the Deck. Rafflesia is still a pretty good Rank 4 in anything that’s Trap heavy, since you can add some of the better Hole Normal Traps and not worry about having to draw them thanks to Rafflesia, just as long as you have Level 4s. It might be most useful in Traptrix Decks now, but it’s still a good generic Rank 4 for using other cards that could help summon it.

The Week-trix ends with a couple of Traprix (sorry) beginning with Rafflesia for Throwback Thursday.  Rank 4 needing any two Level 4 Monsters, being Plant/Earth, with 300 attack but 2500 defense.  You likely know, but it’s the starting point, that Rafflesia is unaffected by the Effects of Traps when she has XYZ Material.  Obviously that’s going to help you until they break through that 2500 Defense.  She protects all other Traptrix Monsters from destruction via Battle or Card Effect.  So the longer she stays on the Field, also again citing Trap protection, she’s a bit of a Force to get off the Field.  A Quick Effect lets you (once per Turn) discard a Material to dump a Normal ‘Hole’ Trap card from your Deck to the Grave and activate it if its conditions are met. That’s fun, and you will get that to happen too in games, juts probably not as often as you want.  Still a pretty nice card though after this time.
