Hello Pojo Fans,

Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm is the Throwback Thursday choice this week, an obvious choice for our Z-ARC theme.

“Supreme King Gate” monster searcher while being a Pendulum Card, completing your Pendulum Scales, though Darkwurm is a scale of 5, but the Gates can be either 0 or 13. You have to control no monsters to activate this effect, so this should be the first move you make before summoning anything. As such, it balances it because you can’t activate it each turn unless you have no monsters. Restricted to only DARK monsters via Pendulum Summoning isn’t much of a restriction with DARK being the most supported Attribute in the game. Search your Supreme King Gate Magician with this effect so it can pop itself to search another Supreme King Gate monster, then it will get Pendulum Summoned during the turn and get you a search upon summon.

As a monster, Darkwurm has standard Level 4 stats and is a searcher for the same cards as it was as a Pendulum Spell. Normal or Special Summoned triggering its effect works with its ability to Special Summon from the grave if you control no monsters. Having a reliable “Supreme King Gate” monster searcher is good, and made even better with the addition to Gate Magician to the archetype. These two work in tandem to get you to your other two Supreme King Gate monsters and add speed to the archetype. It can’t compare with the speed of yesterday’s CoTD, but you get there through Gate Magician, and you get to Gate Magician via Darkwurm.

Darkwurm having a much better monster than the previous two Supreme King Gate monsters to search raises its play in the archetype, as if it wasn’t already high enough as your generic searcher no matter how you use it. Combine these two with Beyond the Pendulum as well as Pendulum Evolution and you have a host of search options for the archetype. Darkwurm is one of the cards you have to see in your opening hand to make this archetype work, even with Gate Magician.

Throwback Thursday this week, since Z-ARC himself was covered not all that long ago, is his best servant and overall great card: Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm.

Darkwurm as a Pendulum Scale is a Scale 5 where once per turn, if you control no monsters, you can place a Supreme King Gate from the Deck into the Pendulum Zone, but you can only Pendulum Summon DARK monsters for the rest of the turn. Honestly you’ll never use Darkwurm for this. Gate Zero is the only Gate (before Magician) with no real downside in the Scale and you’d prefer better Scales than 0 and 5, Gate Infinity could of been great as a Scale 13 if it wasn’t for the fact you got to control no monsters to Pendulum Summon. Anyways, irrelevant effect, but had to be mentioned.

Darkwurm as a monster is a Level 4 DARK Dragon Pendulum with 1800 ATK and 1200 DEF, which are great stats and probably the best Type/Attribute combo in the game. Upon Normal or Special Summon, you can search for a Supreme King Gate directly from the Deck, which means you can grab Gate Zero for your 0 Scale or for a Level 7 body, or grab Supreme King Gate Magician for all the good effects he has. You can also Special Summon this card from the graveyard if you control no monsters, making it a great discard target for Pendulum Call and the main reason you see Dragon Shrine ran in Pendulum Magicians from time to time, alongside a Destrudo for an extra target. Hard once per turn on each effect is fine. Darkwurm is truly made by the monster effects that he has for the searching and revival. You’ll likely never put this into the Pendulum Scale unless you really have to, but the monster effect is so great that running several copies along with ways to get it into the graveyard so you don’t have to Normal Summon it feels right for Pendulum Magicians.

Throwback Thursday brings us arguably the only good Z-ARC oriented card until recently, Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm, a level 4 DARK Dragon Pendulum monster (which got a sidegrade in this set, the appropriately-named Supreme King Dragon Lightwurm) with a scale of 5. As a DARK Dragon Pendulum monster, it’s ridiculously searchable, though in Z-ARC decks you’ll mainly be grabbing it with Odd-Eyes Revolution Dragon or Z-ARC’s new ROTA, Wings of Light, assuming you don’t access it with Dragon Shrine. Its stats are mostly unremarkable, with 1800 attack and only 1200 defense, but at least being a DARK Dragon gives it incredible privilege (notably, making Raider’s Knight!).

Darkwurm’s Pendulum effect is a soft once per turn, letting you place a Supreme King Gate monster directly in your other Pendulum Zone if you control no monsters, at the cost of locking you into Pendulum summoning DARK monsters for the rest of the turn. The lock might seem largely meaningless since most Pendulum Magician, Odd-Eyes, Supreme King, and Performapal monsters are DARK, though Exceed the Pendulum (review later!) being a LIGHT monster makes this effect a liability. You’re supposed to use it to access both Supreme King Gates, though having to control no monsters makes it very awkward, and it doesn’t even help enable Supreme King Gate Infinity either. In a pinch you might use Darkwurm’s Pendulum effect, but most of the time you’ll summon it for its monster effect.

Darkwurm has two hard once per turn monster effects, the first letting you search any Supreme King Gate Pendulum monster upon being Normal or Special Summoned. Simple and sweet, you’ll usually grab Supreme King Gate Zero to enable Supreme King Gate Magician, which you hopefully have in your hand already, but if you opened Zero, you can always search Gate Magician instead! Darkwurm’s other effect lets you Special Summon it from the Graveyard if you control no monsters. Another simple and sweet effect, this dramatically boosts consistency since Foolish Burial and Dragon Shrine (and Dragon Ravine if you’re utterly obsessed, but I already find the deck consistent enough) will access Darkwrum without consuming your Normal Summon. Darkwurm is fairly plain in terms of effects, but it is extremely effective at what it does, and it’s half of your key combo in Supreme King Z-ARC decks. I personally run 3 because Normal Summoning Darkwurm isn’t so bad, but many only run 1 to capitalize on their Normal Summon instead; it’s up to taste if you prefer more combo-heavy builds that take up deck space, but you’re running at least 1.
