An enchantment that becomes a copy of something else is quite unusual, though the concept is actually older than you might guess – Copy Artifact was in Alpha and is still played in Old School casual! The fact that Shapeshifter’s Marrow is a “chaos” style card makes it a little unusual; still, it’s worth noting that blue has tools to reduce that randomness a little bit, starting with the likes of Time Ebb. Depending on the outlook of your deck and your group, though, you might find it fun to just let it ride and roll with whatever you get. In an efficiency sense, Shapeshifter’s Marrow doesn’t really offer anything a more conventional Clone effect can’t, but some decks will care that it’s an enchantment – and it gets maximum points for style and for uniqueness.

For the same cost as a Clone effect, you get both information and the potential to steal what would be the next creature your opponent has coming out of their library; for four mana, that’s not bad. Of course, Shapeshifter’s Marrow has the catch of copying any creature it finds; you could strike it big with a bomb, or you could strike out with something either distinctly useless or actively detrimental. But that sort of variance is what makes this card fun, and there will certainly be times where you’re thrilled to have shoved this into your deck.

Constructed: 2 (outside of niche applications, creatures in non-rotating formats tend to not make this worth the effort, and it’s way too unreliable to justify a spot even in the better match-ups for it)
Casual: 5
Limited: 3.25 (could be worse for 4 mana)
Multiplayer: 3.5 (you get the first creature an opponent sees, so buyer beware)
Commander: 3.75 (I’m sure someone has broken this wide open, somehow)
