Righteous Valkyrie – Kaldheim
Date Reviewed: March 5, 2021
Commander [EDH]: 3.50
Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale. 1 is bad. 3 is average. 5 is great.
Righteous Valkyrie combines two of white’s strengths in a way that makes one – lifegain – suddenly seem a lot more appealing. With the right selection of angels and clerics, it’s easy to get to seven life above your starting total, and her anthem effect will keep your opponent on the coward’s road. Her cost and stats are great for her abilities, and the only downside is the need for very specific deck contents. Sometimes that’s worth it, though.
While lifegain for its own sake is rarely optimal, payoffs like Righteous Valkyrie can help. Seven life above where you start isn’t too daunting a task for white, and this one even can help you get to a suitable life total. Cleric verbiage means it does support the old creature type, as well as the more obvious Angel type, and the payoff of a static +2/+2 to your entire board is worth it.
The main question will be if Righteous Valkyrie’s archetypes will see enough play to make it worth it. This is one of the cheaper Angel creatures, but it also has the misfortune to be in the maligned white (albeit with a flexible color requirement). A 2/4 for 3 isn’t half bad, but you really need to get the passive online to really justify its spot.
Constructed: 3 (I could be wrong, but this feels just a bit too slow to work)
Commander: 4 (Angels are strong here, and this might have use)
