As you’d expect from a card based on one of the first exemplars of Magic goblins, Pashalik Mons hits a lot of that tribe’s notes. He’s got the horde thing down, albeit over a longer time than you might be able to wait in some settings. Still, if you really need it, he will get you there in time. He’s also got the self-explosioning thing down (I hope that’s a word), which goes well with many cards in many sets. I find the interactions with Lorwyn particularly amusing, considering they’re among Magic’s more divergent goblins and Mons is one of Magic’s most “vanilla”. It’s also cool that we now have more than one legitimate choice of mono-red goblin generals for Commander – there’s other ways to make goblin tribal decks in that format, but this way just . . . feels right somehow.

Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4

Despite being referred to in the very first set of the game, Pashalik Mons took over 25 years to finally come to the game properly, with a card that nicely captures his warlord tendencies and complements the Goblin gameplan. Goblins have historically been a “go wide” deck, using a lot of lords and buffs to plow through opponents, and while Pashalik Mons doesn’t directly forfend that gameplan, he does offer a fallback option and a bit of insurance in case things go awry, and an opponent who doesn’t remove him immediately may come to regret it in short order.

Pashalik Mons is a solid enough piece in the Goblin strategy, insurance against all sorts of things. One extra damage each time a Goblin dies adds up quickly, especially since it can go anywhere, and it makes combat math a lot more fun. While other Goblins may be the iconic commanders of the tribe (like Krenko), you may still find plenty of fun to be had in both Constructed and in Commander with this card.

Constructed: 3.5 (a solid “plan B” for Goblins)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 4.5 (if you have at least one other Goblin, Pashalik Mons can win you the game all on his own…eventually)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4.25 (with all the board wipes running around, this does a good job of punishing them, if nothing else)
