It was slightly disappointing when there were no Lhurgoyfs in the Dominaria set, but at least they haven’t been forgotten completely. This guy is actually pretty cool – in the right matchup, he can have absolutely monstrous power, particularly in multiplayer. As a self-discard outlet, I have a feeling people will compare him unfavorably to Rotting Regisaur, but I actually think the more apt comparison is to specters and the like. Where such disruptive creatures are usually small, he combines stats that will kill an opponent rapidly with an ability that can disrupt their ability to deal with him. I think he actually has some good prospects, especially in casual and multiplayer.

The unequivocal Best Creature Type in Magic finally has its first new member in nearly 15 years, and it ain’t bad! Necrogoyf is a bit of a different spin on lhurgoyfs, with only one of its stats being modified by graveyard things…this time, it’s its power, which tracks all creatures in all graveyards and is similar to Mortivore from Odyssey. Where things get interesting is in it having madness (which makes it at home with discard-based decks) and in enabling further insanity for all parties; discard can sometimes backfire, but winnowing down hands means there’s likely less that can thwart your cute little lhurgoyf, and you’re likely playing with a bit of madness to begin with. It’s not going to be an all-star, by any stretch, and 5 mana is definitely on the higher end of the curve if you can’t get its madness trigger to go off, but it has plenty of power packed into its majestic appendages, and not immediately dying to graveyard removal isn’t half bad.

Multiplayer: 3.5 (more players = more swole lhurgoyfs)
