Klefki (Scarlet & Violet 96/198) is a Basic Psychic type with 70 HP, Metal Weakness, and a retreat cost of C. Its ability, Mischievous Lock, only works when it is in the Active Spot; Basic Pokemon in play has no abilities, except its own, of course. Joust does 10 damage for one energy and also discards all Pokemon tools from your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

So, it seems like Klefki joins the ever-growing list of ability denial, even though its range is not large. Despite it not affecting Evolution Pokemon, many abilities are found on Basic Pokemon, and it is still a very big deal to them. Miraidon-ex cannot bring reinforcements for more Basic lightning types; Koraidon-ex cannot accelerate energies; Lumineon-V cannot fetch for Supporter cards; and much more. It doesn’t have to stay in the Active Spot all the time; its retreat cost of C means Beach Court can enable Klefki to retreat for free on the bench. Then, you can bring a hit-and-run attacker to being Klefki back into the Active Spot and disable abilities once more!

However, even some of the evolved Pokemon has abilities as well, and some of them can even be potentially useful that Klefki wouldn’t be able to disable. Still, Klefki will throw a lot of decks off guard, and it’ll be a matter of time until they figure out a way to get Klefki off the field.
