Hello Pojo Fans,

Fallen of Albaz, my dragon boy is our Throwback Thursday choice this week…about time we showcase him during his arc’s focus.

Great Level 4 Dragon that is a slower version of Super Poly. Normal or Special Summon trigger effect that can be used during either player’s turn. Trading one card to get rid of a monster on your opponent’s side of the field is a good 1-for-1, and while this is initially a -1, you get a different monster in its place as well as something from the monster you summon, breaking even but looking a whole lot better than your opponent because you took a monster of theirs away. You could get nothing from your monster, summoning something that doesn’t give you something through an effect and it would still be a good card because it can be a combo interruption against your opponent.

Most of the time you are going to use Albaz to get to his Fusion Monster: Mirrorjade because its fusion requirement is so easily obtained and can banish a card your opponent controls, while getting you something in the End Phase because that is what Albaz Fusion Monsters do when sent to the grave in an fashion. This could even get you Dragoon if an opponent would summon Dark Magician when everyone was playing a copy because of Verte Anaconda.

Easy to use and versatile, Albaz has made his mark on the meta game since his release a few years ago. He’s been a tech choice as well as the center of deck strategies since and I don’t think he’s going anywhere anytime soon. I’m hoping his arc continues, but if his arc ended with him and Ecclesia starting a new journey together, I’m fine with that.

With the end of the Albaz lore here, let’s go back to the monster that helped start all of the events we’ve seen to begin with: Fallen of Albaz.

Albaz is a Level 4 DARK Dragon with 1800 ATK and 0 DEF, so mostly all great qualities for a card to have. The first effect triggers on Normal or Special Summon, letting you discard a card to Fusion Summon a monster from the Extra Deck by using this card and any other monsters on either field as material, but you can’t use other monsters you control as material. There’s probably a better way to word that, but that’s how it’s written on the card. Basically Super Polymerization on legs, and now that we should have all the Albaz Fusions, we got a wide variety of options to where this should be able to fuse with almost every single monster in the game in some capacity. It’s a good way to remove any monster the opponent controls, hence the hard once per turn to prevent you from constantly summoning this to summon all the Dragons you desire to with the opponent’s monsters. Still, it’s a good card. Mainly you send it with Branded Fusion from Deck to get the Fusions you want, but summoning it is more often than not still a viable option if you have to. Albaz was a good start to this lore in terms of his effect.

Throwback Thursday takes us all the way back to the card that started this saga, Fallen of Albaz, a level 4 DARK Dragon monster introduced in Rise of the Duelist, kicking off the Albaz lore along with it. DARK Dragons, as usual, enjoy perhaps the greatest degree of versatility in the entire game, to say nothing about how integral Albaz is for Branded Despia decks. Albaz has a strange stat spread of a decent 1800 attack but a miserable 0 defense; I’m not entirely sure what they mean, but the end result is that Albaz probably won’t stick around too long on the field.

Albaz has a single hard once per turn effect that triggers when it’s Normal or Special Summoned, letting you discard a card to Fusion Summon an appropriate Fusion monster using only Albaz and any number of monsters your opponent controls. Feared as a “walking Super Polymerization”, this effect was initially underwhelming because most of its targets were too specific and limited to other decks from the Albaz lore. However, this effect became much stronger with Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon, which takes practically any Extra Deck monster, and Albaz can still provisionally counter decks with DARK monsters using Starving Venom Fusion Dragon as well as valid targets for Mudragon of the Swamp and Garura. Albaz’s actual effect doesn’t come up too often in Branded Despia decks itself; instead, it’s essential as a Fusion material for Albion the Branded Dragon and Lubellion the Searing Dragon, and of course the aforementioned Mirrorjade to fuel Branded combos. Albaz also has an amusing way to counter Dragon Link decks due to the unique summoning condition of Alba-Lenatus the Abyss Dragon, letting you use opposing Dragon monsters as Fusion materials even after simply setting Albaz. Incidentally, Albaz is a decent target to summon off of Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres since Mirrorjade is relatively generic and essentially turns one disruption into 3. Albaz’s story might be over for now, and the card might not be too impressive, but as long as Branded remains in the meta, Albaz isn’t going anywhere.
