Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper – #MZMI-EN028

If there is a card in a Field Zone, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon “Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper” once per turn this way. You can discard this card; add 1 Level 3 or lower Fiend Tuner from your Deck to your hand, also you cannot Special Summon from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except Fusion or Synchro Monsters. You can only use this effect of “Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper is some Earthbound support that has been long coming for that archetype.

Aligning with the Special Summon ability of the Earthbound main monsters via a Field Spell being present on the field, Stone Sweeper does the same, which is great since it is a Level 5 with Level 4 stats. The Level 5 though makes sense when you look at the two new Synchro Monsters in the archetype, being Level 6 and Level 8 respectfully, Stone Sweeper is the only monster that can work with the Tuners in the archetype to make those Synchro Monsters.

Discard Stone Sweeper to get to your Fiend Tuner monster that you want to use for a Synchro Summon is a good search ability, however, you want Stone Sweeper on the field for that Tuner as well. You will likely search either Earthbound Prisoner Ground Keeper or Earthbound Prisoner Line Walker, but as a Level 3 or lower Fiend Tuner searcher, Stone Sweeper could be used as a tech to search something like the Resonator archetype or D/D/D or Fabled. Extra Deck restriction to Synchro and Fusion Monsters after you activate this effect lines up with the Earthbound Monsters in the Extra Deck, and you get to do any Xyz or Link Summons before activating this, so it is just extra card text at that point.

Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper is a good Tuner search for the archetype to set up your Synchro Summons, as well as a decent extender if you already have the Tuner in your hand. Could’ve been better if it got the search off its Special Summon and had some restriction like “Field Spell must be on the field at resolution of this card’s summon” or something like that. As is it gets you to a piece for the strategy and

We aren’t doing the whole Earthbound archetype, but we’ll at least look at the most generic of their cards with Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper.

Stone Sweeper is a Level 5 DARK Fiend with 1600 ATK and DEF. Don’t like those stats, but do like DARK and Fiend. So first off, you can Special Summon this from the hand if there’s a card in the Field Zone, getting you a free extender for Synchro or Link Plays. You can only summon it once a turn this way, which is fine. The other effect lets you discard this card to search for any Level 3 or lower Fiend Tuner from the Deck, but you can only summon Fusion and Synchros from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn. It’s basically Resonator support since it searches for every last one of them. They’re really the only relevant targets I can think of, with the best Resonators being Vision, Soul, Crimson, Red, and Creation probably. At least this means if you got 2 of these in your hand, you can use one to search and the other can be summoned if you have Field Spells. Hard once per turn on the search, of course. Earthbound Runick is popular, so this can also be ran in that to get to the Earthbound Prisoner Tuners and you got Runick Fountain to make the Special Summon effect live. Besides that, this probably sticks to Resonators and any future Fiend archetypes focused on Synchros.

While we covered Harmonic Synchro Fusion last week, today we’re dipping into Earthbound proper with Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper, a level 5 DARK Fiend monster not unlike its companions. It’s level 5 for a reason, though that doesn’t mean I like it! With only 1600 attack and defense, Stone Sweeper’s stats are underwhelming, keeping it as Fusion and Synchro fodder, which it fortunately is at least competent at (somewhat).

Stone Sweeper can Special Summon from your hand once per turn as long as a Field Spell is active, keeping in theme with Earthbound’s gimmick. It’s not too hard to accomplish, and thankfully Stone Sweeper compensates for potential brickiness with its other effect, a hard once per turn effect to discard it and search any level 3 or lower Fiend Tuner monster, albeit locking you into Fusion and Synchro monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn (largely meaningless in Earthbound). This’ll grab Earthbound Prisoner Ground Keeper or Line Walker to start up your Earthbound combos, though ironically Stone Sweeper has seen much more success as a searcher for Soul Resonator, the main playmaker in Red Dragon Archfiend decks (ironic considering Earthbound dueled against Red Dragon Archfiend in the anime). In its own deck, Stone Sweeper is a good card (or rather, one of their only good cards), but it could’ve been much better if it revived itself from the Graveyard considering the one you discard is pretty much dead. It’s better used in Red Dragon Archfiend for better consistency.

+Can help start Earthbound combos
+Additional searcher for Red Dragon Archfiend decks
-Anti-synergy with itself means you need to open two copies to meaningfully combo in Earthbound
