Demon Bolt is fairly straightforward as spells go; less versatile than some damage spells, but great for anybody who’s tired of planeswalkers, as four damage draws significant vein-flow from all but the most resilient of their number. The very low foretell cost attracts even more attention, and tempts comparisons with Rift Bolt. While the overall cost is higher than for that famous card, you can spread it out over multiple turns, and the general (I think) fairly good quality of foretell cards means you’re less likely to run into the problem where people assumed any morph creature was Exalted Angel, and hence you can actually draw a cunning veil over your opponent’s strategic calculations.

Four damage is an excellent target to hit in terms of damage; Char and Exquisite Firecraft both got to that target and saw fair amounts of Standard play in their day, and Demon Bolt also gets to four damage for three mana. If you’re willing to foretell it, you can split the cost over a couple of turns; there’s no savings to be had, but being able to drop this on turn 3 (or later) without wrecking your tempo completely is a nice bit of upside. This can’t hit players, but four damage is still an excellent amount to try and remove creatures with; you can even chain this with other burn spells to really bring the pain and take out a troublesome permanent.

Constructed: 3.5 (good in Standard, but not so great in other formats)
Casual: 4
Limited: 4.5
Multiplayer: 2.5
Commander: 3.25
