In a purely mechanical sense, this card seems clearly weaker than the Rukh Egg that inspires it. But randomness is not an annoyance to be smoothed out by a gamer with a competitive mentality: it’s part of the universe, and just as importantly, it allows for a wealth of interactions with other Magic cards. For example, just having a Chicken Egg in play lets you roll a die once a turn for no additional cost, which works well with As Luck Would Have It and Willing Test Subject. You can have twice as many chances at getting your token if you combine it with Krark’s Other Thumb. And there are so many interactions you can construct with the Multi-Headed augment card from Unstable that I’m not sure we have space to list them all.

Besides, it’s a giant chicken. That’s just cool.

Chicken Egg played into the randomness of Unglued, offering a potentially fowl result for a low up-front cost. In the best-case scenario, you cast Chicken Egg, it “cracks” on your next turn, and you have a 4/4 Giant Chicken to beak your opponents remorselessly with. The issue, of course, is that getting the poultry punisher out is quite improbable, and you’re left with an 0/1 with no means of protection while it’s taking its sweet time out of the egg. Some of the Unstable dice-manipulation cards, like Snickering Squirrel, can help with getting Chicken Egg to where it wants to be. But even in Un-sets, you can do better than an 0/1 that, once in a blue moon, erupts in a flurry of feathers and shows itself to truly be the beak in show.
