Blastoise V is a Basic, [W] type Pokémon V with 220 HP, [L] Weakness, no Resistance, a Retreat Cost of [CCC], and two attacks.  The first is “Water Gun” for [W], doing 30 damage.  The second is “Torrential Cannon”, which costs [WWW] and does 200 damage, but its effect says that Blastoise V – or rather, “this Pokémon” – cannot use Torrential Cannon again the next turn.  220 HP is good for a Basic Pokémon V, and [W] typing might be somewhat useful if [R] decks remain competitive after SW – Chilling Reign, or if you want to use Frosmoth for Energy acceleration… and yeah, Blastoise V could use that help.  The [L] Weakness is dangerous, and the rest of the stats are “meh”.  Water Gun is the “better than nothing” budget attack.  Torrential Cannon is 10-30 damage shy of being worth the hassle of paying [WWW] and having to switch out each turn to reset the attack’s effect.

Lucky for Blastoise V, it is the only way to reach Blastoise VMAX.  Is Blastoise VMAX any good?  Tune in tomorrow, when we review it.  For now, this Blastoise is the only way to reach it… unless you use Archie’s Ace in the Hole in Expanded.  While Expanded adds more tricks to help Blastoise V out, they’re stuff available to all [W] types (Aqua Patch) or all Pokémon (Muscle Band) so… yeah, doesn’t help as much as it seems like it would.  Still, as bad as I might make it sound… it is just subpar.
