Can’t do a Spider-Man set without its most iconic antihero, I suppose. Venom’s always been in a weird spot, vacillating between hero and villain as the narrative calls for, and he was bound to make an appearance in this set, the less malevolent alien symbiote of the series. (I think it’s an alien. Don’t fact-check this.)
Anyway, Eddie Brock and his symbiotic alter-ego are interesting. Eddie himself is a three-mana creature that fetches something small back, which can help eke out more value from a small creature or set up future plays. He’s a vanilla 3/3 besides, but there’s always the transformation lurking, and six mana is a fair price for what you get.
Venom, Lethal Protector is certainly a menace…he even has it as his ability. Haste, trample, and menace mean he’ll be ripping through a board, and his sor-of Disciple of Bolas-adjacent effect can be very scary. If you sacrifice something big, you can get something else big…and even if you don’t hit the jackpot, it’s still a surge of card draw in exchange for a creature you don’t have as much use for. I could see things like Allosaurus Rider pairing well with it, but that’s another story.
My only real gripe, if you will, is that the two halves don’t really synergize too well, but they’re individually decent. Eddie Brock can make for good value early, and Venom can crack a game open immediately once he gets going. This might definitely be a card to keep an eye out for.
Constructed: 3.75 (not sold on him in Standard, but I think he does just enough to make a good case)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 4.5 (his evasion makes him a vicious clock)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4.5 (might be one of the better Commander plants of the set, doing nearly everything Jund could want in a Commander)

Last but not least, we come to the third member of the archenemies, Venom. In recent years, Venom’s star has risen enormously, mostly because of Tom Hardy’s excellent portrayal of Eddie Brock in the eponymous movies.
Another double-faced card, with another reanimation strategy, just like Green Goblin. Transforming Eddie Brock into Venom makes a very big scary beast: a 5/5 with menace, trample and haste that also lets you draw cards and put a permanent on the battlefield as a trade for sacrificing a creature. This seems highly potent in several decks, especially because of its Jund colors. Think about transforming Eddie with Moonmist, that means it can be on your board in turn 3 or 4, providing your mana is on par.
As Venom is both a hero and a villain, the only question remains: is this card heroic? Or is it villainous?

Venom’s history has more twists than you can even count, but Magic has the first era or portrayal of the character, with Eddie Brock on the front side of the double-faced card. The question of which side appeals most to a deckbuilder is really about what deck they happen to be building at any given moment – they do quite different things, and the Venom side is much more appealing as a build-around card. Eddie Brock does something useful, but he doesn’t do it powerfully enough to make him the main focus of your deck. I will say, though, that there might be some value in a deck that seems to be playing a game with low costs and small creatures but has the option of switching to Venom if the game goes long enough. They certainly did a good job of making him hard to stop via combat, which is pretty much definitional to Venom in the comics! And there will be other decks that can use both – Jund has its share of one-cost utility creatures, after all.
