Hello Pojo Fans,

More Duelist Advance for us this week with a quick look at the newest piece of Vanquish Soul support that helped them attain Tier 1 status: Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue.

Revealing one or two cards in your hand hasn’t seemed to slow down the archetype’s effectiveness against the opponent, nor has needing specific Attributes to gain certain effects. Each Vanquish Soul has a Special Summon ability from the hand and in the case of Hollie Sue, she just needs to reveal another Vanquish Soul in your hand to Special Summon herself during either Main Phase. 500ATK isn’t going to do much but 2200DEF can hold up to decently well. The Special Summon ability that Vanquish Soul monsters have, alongside being able to match multiple Levels within the K9 archetype is the reason why those two archetypes have had great success working together. TLDR: Easy Special Summon ability during either turn is going to get a monster on board during the opponent’s turn or spam the field during yours.

Onto the Attribute revealing. Another Quick Effect, you only get to activate one of the potential two effects, but, as a Quick Effect, if Hollie Sue is still on the field during the opponent’s turn, you’ll get a shot at both. Revealing an EARTH and DARK will get you a Change of Heart, but you have to target the lowest ATK monster your opponent controls. This feels balanced: revealing two cards and giving your opponent some info to steal their weakest monster, but that doesn’t mean anything if you’re stealing their only monster. Revealing a FIRE and DARK will get you another extension, Special Summoning a non-Psychic Vanquish Soul from the Deck. With all the Vanquish Soul monsters bearing a different Type, you are only restricted from getting another Hollie Sue, which is why they made sure to prevent you from using both effects in the same Chain, and restrict you to only one effect per turn, just in case you get two copies on the field.

Change of Heart effect is quite useful, but the more monsters your opponent has on the field the less useful it is if that low ATK monster you have to steal isn’t going to be of any use to you. Special Summoning another Vanquish Soul from your Deck thins the Deck and gets you to using that monster’s effect this turn. Mad Love is the only Vanquish Soul Main Deck monsters that cannot reveal a FIRE Attribute for their effects. If you happen to only have a DARK and FIRE in this situation, then Mad Love would likely not be your choice, because its singular DARK effect only drops an opponent’s monster by 500ATK/DEF. Regardless, any Vanquish Soul you get with Hollie Sue is going to help you and if you get Jiaolong with Hollie Sue, you’ll benefit from its effect corresponding with a FIRE Attribute, as well as the potential for a Rank 5 Xyz Summon.

Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue is a searcher and, as a Quick Effect, can be like a cost-free Enemy Controller. Sure, it has to be the lowest ATK monster your opponent controls, but that doesn’t matter if your opponent only has one monster. Dual Quick Effects during either turn and a Quick Effect to become an extender is what this archetype is all about and shows the lethality they have alongside something like K9.

Extra archetype support for Duelist’s Advance, starting the week off with a card we probably should have got to before the Deck took hits, but is still viable in the main game and better in Genesys due to it being released: Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue.

Hollie Sue is a Level 5 EARTH Psychic with 500 ATK and 2200 DEF. It’s a fine wall, VS get another EARTH name with this, and Psychic helps run TCBOO. Being Level 5 also made K9 a perfect fit in Vanquish Soul as well. First effect lets you reveal a Vanquish Soul in your hand as a Quick Effect to Special Summon this directly from the hand, getting you a body on the field, potentially before you even get a turn, which is great especially since its reveal effect is a Quick Effect, just like all other Vanquish Soul cards. The first option lets you reveal an EARTH and DARK to take control of a monster the opponent controls with the lowest ATK, mostly for stopping the opponent’s initial plays for its best use rather than attempting to make an end board piece. FIRE and DARK lets you summon a Vanquish Soul directly from the Deck that isnt a Psychic, basically just excluding Hollie Sue, which is great to get you to Razen to search your Heavy Borger or Caesar Valius for boss monsters, or Jialong to make your Jokull live with a solid target, or you get to Dr. Mad Love to search for the archetypal Field Spell to keep searching Vanquish Soul monsters and get the Traps directly from the Deck. VS became a powerhouse thanks to this support, mainly boosted with the K9 cards, and was very strong before both Razen and Stake your Soul both went to 1. Vanquish Soul is still viable in the main game, this card is still a powerhouse for the archetype, just in a weaker state now.

Now for Genesys, K9 costs so many point that it isn’t really worth it, and Rock of the Vanquisher isn’t legal due to being a Link. In exchange, the slower format makes pure Vanquish Soul a powerhouse in the format, due to this being the only card in the archetype with a point cost at 10 points, meaning you can use 30 points for the playset and the rest of the archetype is free, with the rest of your points going towards solid hand traps to reveal with your Vanquish Soul cards. Basically, if you don’t count Rock being legal, Vanquish Soul is full power in Genesys and one of the best Decks in that format.

This week is centered around bombshell (well, mostly) one-off support from Duelist Advance. What else to start with other than the big card of the set? Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue is our first card this week, a level 5 EARTH Psychic monster from the Vanquish Soul archetype. Previously, the main ways you’d search it would be through Vanquish Soul Razen or Stake Your Soul! with an EARTH monster (like K9-17 Izuna), but with those cards recently Limited, you’ll likely have to search Sue through Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love and Vanquish Soul, Start!. Sue’s stats aren’t great, with a terrible 500 attack only backed up by a decent 2200 defense, but they might as well be 0 with how we’re using it! After all, you can always tag it out for Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger or Vanquish Soul Caesar Valius.

Sue comes with 2 hard once per turn, one per chain effects, the first being a Quick Effect to Special Summon itself from your hand during the Main Phase by revealing any other Vanquish Soul monster in your hand. This is key for enabling turn 0 plays and dodging targeted disruptions, as anyone familiar with the other high-level Vanquish Soul monsters would know. This does make Sue a bit annoying in hybrid builds– it’s rare but possible to only open Sue and something like Izuna, so just keep that in mind. You might be thinking “so what? Pluton does the same thing!”, and while Vanquish Soul HG is technically a better turn 0 enabler, Sue’s actual reveal effects are what set it apart. Rather than a weird stat boost, Sue’s other effect will let you either reveal an EARTH and a DARK monster to take control of your opponent’s monster with the lowest attack until the End Phase, or reveal a FIRE and a DARK monster to Special Summon a non-Psychic Vanquish Soul monster from your deck. Both of these are amazing; the first is solid disruption since combo pieces generally have low stats (and you can simply use it immediately on small fry anyway), while the other helps another body for Start to grab Vanquish Soul Snow Devil, though you’ll never say no to another body in general. With it now being Limited, this is a great opportunity to search Razen, which from there can get as many attributes in your hand as possible to enable Snow Devil’s nuke effect. It won’t happen all the time, but using Sue to steal an opponent’s combo piece on turn 0 is icing on the proverbial cake. Sue itself perfectly encapsulates Vanquish Soul, and perhaps fighting games in general (fittingly enough); it takes some effort to use it properly, but when you do, it’s completely devastating. Even with the brick chance, you’ll likely want to run 3 copies even in hybrid builds, and of course in pure Vanquish Soul it’s a no-brainer. Genesys is a bit tricky because Sue costs 10 points, but it’s too important to skimp out on regardless; you’ll likely have to cut K9 in Genesys.

+Powerful extender and decent disruption on a versatile card
+Enables strong turn 0 plays
-Plays can differ dramatically depending on your hand
-Potentially bricky in hybrid builds
