Hello Pojo Fans,

Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger is the first DARK Vanquish Soul we’ll review in this archetype based around video game tropes.

Big Level 7 Machine-Type monster that, being a DARK, will help Razen destroy a column of monsters. On its own, Borger can target any Vanquish Soul monster other than himself (a Machine) and pop it back to the hand to Special Summon himself. It is always handy to see Level 5 and higher monsters having Special Summon effects that are easily attainable. As a Quick Effect you have some disruption during your opponent’s turn. While not being a negate ability, it does provide you with a way to save a monster of yours and add a big body to the field. On your turn it allows you to punch through for more damage and recycle something like Razen for another summon and search.

Borger’s other Quick Effect involving the Attributes in your hand allow you to potentially draw a card or do 1500LP damage to your opponent. You’ll need a DARK & EARTH monster to inflict the damage, but lets be honest, you aren’t doing that effect unless it puts your opponent under the Solemn Warning/Strike LP line or finishes them. Drawing a card is too good an effect and requires only having a DARK monster in your hand versus having a DARK and an EARTH monsters in your hand. Another copy of Borger or a copy of Dr. Mad Love, or any DARK monster will do. I’m glad they made the Vanquish Soul monster effects work with any monster rather than restrict them to revealing a monster within the archetype that matches the Attribute in question.

Borger is just as good as Razen. Easy Special Summon ability that can save a monster of yours during either turn, or stack attack during your turn. Combine that with a draw ability needing only to have a monster that has the most supported Attribute in the game, and the LP ability seems like an unnecessary effect. It’s good to have though, as you can activate both the Special Summon and LP damage in the same turn, but not the same Chain (all Vanquish Soul have this restriction). Good high level monster, always take the free draw.

Want to generate more advantage besides with Razen, cause there’s more options for that as we see with Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger.

Heavy Borger is a Level 7 DARK Machine with 2500 ATK and 1500 DEF. The ATK stat is good, DARK is a strong Attribute, and Machine is good. First effect is a Quick Effect in the Main Phase to target a non-Machine Vanquish Soul monster (so anything besides Heavy Borger) and return it to the hand to Special Summon this card. Gets your Razen or Mad Love back in the hand for Rock of the Vanquisher while also getting a stronger monster on the field is nice, plus it means you can use this card’s other effects, which you can trigger by revealing monster(s) in the hand with the listed Attribute(s). Revealing just a DARK monster lets you draw a card, so easy and free draw power by likely showing the opponent a card they already know is in your hand. If you want to reveal an EARTH and FIRE, mainly because you might of used Pot of Prosperity and can’t draw, you can inflict 1500 damage to the opponent, helping you inch closer to winning (though the Prosperity scenario only would do 750 damage) or giving you the LP advantage for time in the round at bigger tournaments. Same HOPT clause and not being able to use both effects in the same chain. Heavy Borger is one of two bosses for the archetype, and this is the one that’s better at getting you more card advantage with the draw effect. The burn will also come up a lot, as there’s a ton of scenarios where it’s more enticing than drawing a card or just a case where it’s the only effect you can use. Vice versa is true for the draw effect. Good boss for the archetype, worthy to have some copies of it in the Deck.

Continuing our VS coverage is Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger, a level 7 DARK Machine monster. There’s no particular way to search it outside of Vanquish Soul Razen or Stake your Soul, so its level might prove problematic, but we’ll get to that later. With 2500 attack and 1500 defense, Borger’s decent enough on the offensive, though it’ll prove lackluster if it’s stuck in defense position.

Like Razen, Borger has two hard once per turn effects that can’t be activated in the same chain, and in fact, both of Borger’s effects are Quick Effects. The first one can only be activated during your Main Phase, returning a non-Machine Vanquish Soul monster you control to the hand to Special Summon Borger from your hand. This effect is Borger’s main claim to fame and also a drawback, as Borger allows Razen or Mad Love to dodge Infinite Impermanence and Effect Veiler by tagging onto the field and guaranteeing your searches. Of course, this does open up Borger to bricking if you run three copies and don’t open any other Vanquish Soul monsters you can summon immediately. Borger’s other effect, keeping with Vanquish Soul tradition, lets you reveal either a DARK monster to draw one card or reveal an EARTH and FIRE monster to burn your opponent for 1500 damage. The DARK effect will probably be the one you use more often, since it’s not hard to have Mad Love or another Borger in hand compared to needing Razen and an EARTH target, but the burn can be useful if you need an extra push for OTK or if you find yourself about to time out. Borger is easily one of the deck’s most powerful cards, but there is debate as to whether you run one, two, or three; I think the risk of bricking on Borger is small enough that you can still run three, and the payoff is well-worth it.
