They’re really not going to stop with the Reserved List remixes – sure, they raise eyebrows given the older cards’ legendary reputations, but they’re also very popular. And to be fair, I don’t think any of them has really broken the multiverse in half the way cards like Tolarian Academy once did. Uthros has several factors slowing it down, not least the need to play lots of creatures alongside an ability designed for combo. I should note, though, that modern times are not like the days of the original Academy, when artifact creatures tended to be less efficient than non-artifact creatures due to their ability to go in any deck. That means you don’t have to sacrifice other elements of your game plan to get cards that can station Uthros – you can get your space Academy in a surprisingly reasonable time, and once you do, you’ll barely notice the difference between it and the original.

A bit of familiar text that might raise eyebrows, Uthros, Titanic Godcore is one of the mythic rare planets, and they function like the spaceships do in needing to be stationed before really turning on. The benefits all differ, but they turn on at 12 charge counters, and Uthros turns on into…Tolarian Academy, a land restricted in Vintage and banned everywhere else.
That said, this isn’t Tolarian Academy 2.0; it’s thankfully a bit weaker. It comes in tapped, and it needs 12+ power to turn on. While this isn’t insurmountable as an ask, it’s still a lot, and you’re unlikely to, outside of Phyrexian Dreadnought shenanigans, have this turned on by turn 2. Those do exist, and Uthros does tap for mana normally if you don’t have artifacts, but it’s still something that slows this down.
That said, artifacts have steadily become more prevalent, thanks to tokens, and Uthros can leverage those tokens into a massive problem for your opponents. If you have a good board, untapping with the station ability could push a game to its conclusion that turn, and there are plenty of ways to abuse this until it breaks. Still, coming in tapped and needing to be stationed are downsides, and while this is definitely powerful, I feel comfortable in saying it’s merely going to be “good” and not “format destroying”.

After we saw the ‘reprinting’ of Tolarian Academy in Ixalan with Vault of Catlacan, this time we’re seeing one in space. Uthros is one of five planet lands and it’s probably the most powerful one, together with Evendo, the green one.
The station cost is quite high at 12+, but once you reach that stage (remember, creatures with summoning sickness can station on entry) this is a powerful mana machine.
Azorius Artifacts is making waves in Standard and it’s no surprise that Uthros is becoming an integral part of that deck. You get to pump out artifact creature tokens with Simulacrum Synthesizer and you can then start to station Uthros. Bigger and better seems to be the idea here.
I love the art on this card, especially with the tiny event horizon in the back (is that Sothera?), making Uthros look as gigantic as it’s probably intended to be.
