Hello Pojo Fans,
Trickstar Holly Angel is our Throwback Thursday choice this week and was the early indication that this archetype would be about effect damage and Special Summoning.
Two Trickstar monsters remains incredibly easy through Candina > Light Stage > Lillybell. The 200LP damage Holly Angel will deal each time you Special Summon or Normal Summon a Trickstar to one of her zones may not seem like much, but Narkissus can Special Summon off your opponent taking damage, Band Drumatis can make an opponent’s ATK become 0ATK for the turn, Trickstar Magical Laurel can get you another Trickstar Special Summon off the effect damage, and tomorrow’s card off effect damage is a spot removal.
Destruction protection for Trickstars Holly Angel points to forces a focus no her, but this can help against your opponent using something like Ghost Ogre against a Trickstar Holly Angel points to. Protection is protection and you can use Holly Angel to protect your bigger, better Trickstar monsters after summoning her first.
Finally, Holly Angel can gain some good ATK for the turn: equal to the effect damage Trickstar monsters inflict on your opponent. 2000ATK already on a Link-2 is impressive, and Band Sweet Guitar alongside Holly Angel would double the damage Trickstars deal to the opponent, doubling what Holly Angel can gain. Holly Angel’s ATK gain may only be for the turn, but she can take a good swipe at the opponent before dropping back down.
Trickstar Holly Angel still after these years has a lot going for her. She’s got good stats, easily summoned, protects what she points to so you can progress your field, and can be a stronger attacker for the turn in line with the effect damage strategy of the archetype. Protecting your bigger Link Monsters or your Fusions against hand traps that destroy is important, and even focusing an opponent’s removal ability onto Holly first can be a difference-maker.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us the first Trickstar Link we got, and the ace of the Deck: Trickstar Holly Angel.
Holly Angel is a Link-2 LIGHT Fairy with 2000 ATK and arrows pointing Bottom Left and Bottom Right. Strong ATK for a Link-2, LIGHT/Fairy still a great combination, and arrows are perfect for this Link-centric strategy. Materials are any 2 Trickstar monsters, which you can summon instantly with Trickstar Festival, but you also got a ton of extenders in Trickstar to get to a Link-2 like Aqua Angel, Corobane, Hoody, and Lilybell to name a few plus the archetype is fairly consistent with Light Stage and Candina both being searchers. Each time a Trickstar monster(s) is summoned to a zone this card points to, you deal 200 damage to the opponent, which you can easily deal at least 1000 damage with your Link-1s and all the Link Climbing you can do. Trickstar monsters this points to also cannot be destroyed by battle, which does combo with the first effect of Aqua Angel if she does actually stay on the field. Finally, if your opponent takes damage by the effect of a Trickstar monster, this card gains ATK equal to the damage they took til the end of the turn, which is mostly going to be small 200 ATK boosts, but the combination of Lycoris and Reincarnation the Deck is known for can get you a 1200 ATK boost to make sure the opponent doesn’t run this over in battle with 3200 ATK at least, 3400 if you have Light Stage up. Holly Angel is a Trickstar only card, of course, but she’s solid for giving your Trickstars some protection, giving you additional burn, and being able to gain ATK to help finish the opponent with whatever battle damage you need left. It’s staple for the Trickstar Extra Deck since it’s fairly solid for the archetype and its gameplan since the original way to play the Deck in 2018/2019 doesn’t work as well when all the new support makes Link Spamming more viable.

Art: 4/5 for the original artwork and 4.5/5 for the alternate artwork, it’s the only alt art from the Link VRAINS Box that felt better than the original, though I wonder if either art gets a LART printing?

In preparation for tomorrow’s card, Throwback Thursday brings us Trickstar Holly Angel, a Link 2 LIGHT Fairy Link monster with standard bottom left and bottom right arrows. It’ll take any 2 Trickstar monsters, so your standard combo routes with Trickstar Candina and Trickstar Aqua Angel will almost certainly get to it. 2000 attack is surprisingly on the higher side for a Link 2, but still not that great in the grand scheme of things so you’ll likely be relying on beaters like Accesscode Talker for more muscle, which is still true even with the new sub-boss monster.
Holly Angel has 3 effects that are surprisingly simple, so this is no Circular or Poplar. While on the field, Holly Angel will protect the Trickstar monsters it points to from destruction by both battle and card effect. Protection is usually appreciated, but in this case it’s not very helpful when Holly Angel itself is quite weak and most Trickstar monsters have relatively low value in the first place. The most important effect is another Continuous Effect– Holly Angel will burn your opponent for 200 damage each time you Special Summon a Trickstar monster to a zone it points to– very little damage, but at least it’s better than nothing. As it’s not once per turn, you can hypothetically FTK with certain combo-heavy builds, though this is no longer recommended in the current metagame! This leads right into Holly Angel’s third and final effect, which boosts its own attack by the amount of damage your opponent took whenever a Trickstar monster inflicts effect damage to your opponent. The obvious intention is for you to burn your opponent as much as possible with your Trickstar effects, then finish them off with a huge swing from Holly Angel with buffed stats. It’s a simple tactic on paper, but in practice is just not that great. Holly Angel’s retrain is considerably more useful, so I’d struggle to justify playing this one unless you’re going all-in on FTK builds.
+Can enable FTKs due to the non-once per turn burn
+Protection can help in emergencies
-Trickstar burn strategy in general is outdated
-Mediocre effects overall
