Hello Pojo Fans,

Trickstar time this week for CoTD, and we’re kicking it off with Trickstar Aqua Angel.

Looks like the Trickstar are branching out into the Marincess archetype, as Aqua Angel is always treated as a Marincess card as well. A generic ability to protect any Link Monster that points to her from battle destruction is useful, but with those stats (Level 4 0ATK0DEF) she isn’t going to be winning any battles or staying on the field for very long. That reason is likely why she has one of her two effects. Sadly though, they are only once per Duel for each…though I can understand why.

Special Summoning Aqua Angel from the grave or hand as long as you control a Trickstar or Marincess monster would always ensure you have access to a Link-2 at the very worst, as well as being able to Special Summon her to a zone a Link Monster points to, giving them that mentioned battle protection. Some Marincess monsters have effects that only kick when battling an opponent’s monster (like Wonder Heart) and now you can run them into bigger monsters to gain effects without losing them in battle.

The second effect is the best one if you can trigger it early, and with the ability to go into a Link-1 Trickstar with this card, you can. Using Aqua Angel as Link Material enables a full look at your opponents cards…all of them. Trap Dustshoot plus a peak on the field is incredible and if you do this first turn before they’ve even set anything you know exactly what’s coming and can gauge how to proceed. Marincess Blue Slug, Marincess Sea Angel, and Trickstar Colchia make this card a once per Duel. Summon Aqua Angel, link off into one of those three and get a peak, then Special Summon her back and climb into a Link-2 at worst.

Both archetypes just got a powerful card that aids both in link climbing and strategy. Even at once per duel there’s plenty of ways to Special Summon Aqua Angel in both archetypes, so even if you use her ability straight-away, you can still keep bringing her back within each archetype to aid in Link Monster protection and having a material on board. If it wasn’t once per Duel, it would be limited to one. Just saying…it doesn’t specify Marincess or Trickstar Link Monster to enable the peak ability. WATER Attribute and Fairy-Type users that Link Summon, may be a spicy tech choice?

We felt due for some Trickstar support at some stage since they haven’t had much since VRAINS ended, so we start the week with a new Trickstar monster that doubles as a Marincess: Trickstar Aqua Angel.

Aqua Angel is a Level 4 WATER Fairy with 0 ATK and DEF. Stats aren’t going to matter on a monster you use as Link Material, WATER works with Marincess, and Fairy works for Trickstars. It’s always treated as a Marincess card, hence the mention of the archetype. Link Monsters that point to this card cannot be destroyed by battle, which likely won’t matter since this is being used to summon said Link, and the opponent can just get over this first. The other two effects are each a once per Duel, since they are fairly strong. The first effect lets you just Special Summon this from the hand or graveyard if you control a Trickstar or Marincess monster, giving both of Blue Angel’s archetype’s an extra extender to make Links. The other effect triggers if it’s sent to the graveyard as Link Material, letting you look at the opponent’s hand and all their set cards, and it’s always great to have that knowledge to let you know what the opponent has that you need to play around. You see a Nibiru, you’re likely not summoining 5 monsters til you can first make an answer to it or ensure you can play past it. It’s a good support card for both Trickstars and Marincesses giving you an extender and hand knowledge on a single card, which makes sense why you can only use effect once per Duel. It can be bricky cause of that if you run multiples, and it is searchable, but you might also want to see it as soon as possible to get hand knowledge from the opponent before overextending. Play by preference, but at least 1 for Trickstar and Marincess, it’s great.

The black sheep of Duelists of Radiance, this week we’re getting into the Trickstar Support, which actually wraps up our Maze of the Master coverage. Trickstar Aqua Angel starts us off, a level 4 WATER Fairy monster– unlike most Trickstars, which are LIGHT, though it’s for the better considering Aqua Angel is also a Marincess monster! Being WATER will helpfully let you summon it under Marincess’s WATER lock. Speaking of which, the main ways you can access it are either through Trickstar Candina or, more practically, sending it with Marincess Blue Tang, which we’ll get to later. Statwise, Aqua Angel has horrendous stats of 0 for both attack and defense. At least you can search it with Piri Reis Map if you wanted to. Not that I recommend it.

While on the field, Link monsters that point to Aqua Angel become indestructible by battle. It’s nice to give even more protection to your Marincess Link monsters since Marincess Battle Ocean will effectively make them towers, though it’s not too helpful since you’re still vulnerable to Kaiju and nothing stops your opponent from simply battling Aqua Angel thanks to its terrible stats. Oddly, Aqua Angel comes with 2 once per duel effects. Aqua Angel’s first effect will let you Special Summon it from your hand or Graveyard as long as you control a Marincess or Trickstar monster. That means at minimum, it’s an extender after being searched by Candina or sent by Blue Tang to help you go into Link 2 plays. The main meat of Aqua Angel is its other effect, triggering if it’s sent to the Graveyard as Link material (trivial considering Marincess has 2 Link 1 monsters!), letting you look at your opponent’s hand and Set cards. Hand peeking is a very uncommon effect and thus an underrated one– while you’ll rarely go through the trouble of running techs just for a peek, it’s nice to have it on an extender body that makes it effectively free. Triple Tactics Talent was hit, after all. Being able to look at your opponent’s hand lets you know what Hand Traps to expect (or not expect, in the absence of them) or what they’re likely to start with next turn. The angel-shaped elephant in the room is, of course, whether or not these effects are actually worth being once per duel. Konami seems to put a lot of value into monsters that can revive themselves for basically free, and I guess I get that they want to keep peeking as a relatively inaccessible mechanic. Still, I’m not sure if it’s warranted in this case, even without a lock, considering neither Marincess nor Trickstar would be particularly broken if Aqua Angel could come back every turn. Despite these complaints, it’s definitely a combo piece you want to run just for the extender effect, so you can’t go wrong with just 1 in both decks.

+Solid extender easily accessible in both Marciness and Trickstar
+Hand knowledge can be an incredibly powerful tool
-Effects are overbalanced by being once per duel
-Protection is largely pointless due to poor stats
