For many comics fans, Thanos is the epitome of overarching menace – Thijs summarized the storyline much better than I could, as I’ve been more of a DC reader over the years and came late to the Infinity Stones (Gems) quest. Still, my understanding is that each of the Stones is a powerful cosmic artifact in its own right, even without the others or any shenanigans, and this Magic card really captures both that power and the kinds of things someone like Thanos can do with it when they put their mind to it. In a lot of contexts, it could play as “just” a Charcoal Diamond. Yet it’s never just a Charcoal Diamond, because your opponents will always be weighed down by the fact that if the game goes long you will turn it into a single-card engine. And one that requires very specific answers, no less. I’m not expecting it to be quite as dominant as The One Ring, but I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to be proven wrong about that either.

And don’t forget that some people have pointed out that The Soul Stone introduces a whole new card type, and the illustration we’ve put on this page has Thanos specifically showing the spaces on his gauntlet for the other five Infinity Stones. We might be on the verge of our own cosmic crisis . . .

A two-mana mana rock with indestructibility and late-game utility? What could possibly go wrong.

The Soul Stone looks to be the first in an upcoming cycle of Infinity Stone artifacts, though whether or not they’ll let you Thanos-snap someone out of existence at the end remains to be seen. A black mana rock that turns into a reanimation engine late-game is certainly a solid set of abilities; in particular, this being two mana makes this quite potent overall, because the jump from two to four mana on the curve often is one of the most effective spikes in terms of mana.

This probably won’t obliterate formats, since this is generally not going to turn on as a reanimation engine until very late, but having that surety in your back pocket is very scary, and it’s on top of the early utility. Even if this isn’t a Constructed powerhouse, The Soul Stone will likely be this set’s chase card all the same, and I feel like any black deck in Commander will have a reason to at least consider this.

Comic book lovers will probably mutter under their breath when they see this card. “It’s called a gem,” they will say. The Infinity Stones, as we’ve come to know them from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are powerful artifacts that give the wielder immense power, especially when all six are combined. In the picture we see Thanos, who at a certain point combines the stones together and becomes a God, bigger even than Death (The Thanos Quest, Marvel Comics, 1990).

The Soul Stone (or Soul Gem) is taken from the In-Betweener, a cosmic entity that represents duality.

The card then. A mana rock at first, with an interesting extra ability. It costs a bit of mana, but once ‘harnessed’, the Soul Stone becomes an incredibly powerful reanimation engine. We’ve seen reanimation cards like this before, but only a few with a static ability that goes off every upkeep (we all fondly remember Sheoldred, of course). The difference here is that the Soul Stone happens to be indestructible. That means it’s gonna take a lot to get rid of it. And that, my friends, makes this a force to be reckoned with. I’m curious to see how this will play out, but I might suggest that people start looking for answers.
