Based on power level alone, Sunpearl Kirin would probably have been a rare back in Champions of Kamigawa (the only other plane where we’ve seen kirins so far). Not so much for its staggering keyword efficiency, although those stats and keywords at this cost are very effective on both offense and defense. It’s more about being arguably the most powerful card of white’s self-bounce theme, with the ability to reset planeswalkers and sagas on top of the usual applications. The last part, where it references tokens, can feel a little tacked-on, but I’m sure some players will welcome an extra use for trinket tokens, especially Food tokens in decks that don’t otherwise need the lifegain.

Sunpearl Kirin is hardly the most impressive creature, but it is quite good at what it does: pull something out of harm’s way in a pinch. Two mana to pull a card back to your hand is quite nice, and if you bounce a token, it’ll draw you a card, which is qiote nice when stapled to a 2/1 with flying. Creatures like these aren’t flashy (though this one does have flash), but it does punch a bit above its weight, and being able to save something you want to keep alive or just reuse a potent entry trigger is well worth the price of admission.
