Cost reduction may be a dangerous concept for game balance, at least in its broad sense, but there are a few successful examples of cost reduction mechanics which have been both fun to play and well designed. Web-slinging is quite similar to some of the other creature-based mechanics like ninjutsu, as it rewards you for using your creatures, be that for attacking or for some other thing. And Spider-Sense is an example of the mechanic’s potential power: spending one mana to counter your choice of the three categories listed is almost guaranteed to be a major and likely game-winning tempo swing. It even works against storm, which is actually a triggered ability. Frankly, spending two mana is not much weaker, but when you leave just one mana open, your opponents won’t always see this card coming or might just forget about it. That just ensures that it’s going to be a top-tier card, though.

A one-mana counterspell is quite a tantalizing prospect, and Swan Song has proven to have legs (or wings, I guess) in a lot of formats. Spider Sense isn’t quite as good; it’s normally two mana, and the condition to pull it down to 1 is to bounce a tapped creature you control. The bounce needn’t be a downside, though, as it lets you reuse creatures with potent comes-into-play abilities and pull them out of harm’s way, and this also comes with the fun of being able to hit triggered abilities. Ability countering is relatively scarce, but if you can hit the right ability, you can pull out quite the heist.

The main conditional here is how often you will be able to cast this for one mana. Admittedly, Negate has long been a playable spell, and while this is a mostly worse Negate, there’s room for it to be conditionally better, and I think that should give this plenty of legs.

Constructed: 4.25 (it can be quite dangerous if you pull this off in the right setting)
Casual: 3.75
Limited: 3.25 (maybe not going to hit as many things here, but there will be plenty of things it can hit)
Multiplayer: 3

First we talked the spider, then the suit, today we talk about another ability that makes Spidey so amazing, his spider-sense!

Of course this is a counterspell. You sense someone might do something terrible, and WHAM you hit it right back.

I like this card. It’s versatile, it’s niche and powerful, and the web-slinging mechanic gives it an extra edge. It reminds me of Consign to Memory, which also made waves in Modern for a while. It doesn’t compare to its strength, but countering a triggered ability can grant you the tempo you need.

And, of course, it beats the Green Goblin. Who doesn’t like to see that?

Constructed: 4 (this might become quite useful)
