Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku – #MZMI-EN072

When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 “Majespecter” monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of “Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku” once per turn. While this card is in your Monster Zone, your opponent cannot target it with card effects, also it cannot be destroyed by your opponent’s card effects.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku is our Throwback Thursday choice and is still one of the best ones.

Like all Majespecter monsters from the Main Deck, Bunbuku gets an effect when Normal or Special Summoned. In its case, it is your Majespecter monster search. With Majespecters having a designated searcher for each, and Nekomata serving as the general searcher for the entire archetype, Bunbuku had to be the monster searcher. Okay stats for a monster searcher, though you’d like to see the ATK a little higher. At Level 3, Bunbuku pairs with Nekomata for your Rank 3 summons. With a scale of 5, Bunbuku is tied for the highest scale in the archetype, which oddly enough doesn’t boast a scale high enough for Kirin, which you’d think they would’ve done by this point with the monster owning that scale be generic to not as good to balance out giving you the ability to Pendulum Summon Kirin within the archetype (guess they are signaling mixing higher scales into the archetype).

Protection against targeting and destruction effects from your opponent gives this small monster some good protection, which may explain its lower ATK. Majespecter Sonics can double Bunbuku’s ATK, but halve the battle damage it can do for the turn, making it a respectable 2400ATK. Being a Level 3 also was a downside, as there are far better choices for Rank 4 summons, but you have the other archetype monsters for that.

Even with new support, Bunbuku still stands as a good monster for Majespecters and one you are likely to still run. Yes, you’ve got Nekomata to search monsters as well, but you want to save Nekomata for being a situational searcher. With the addition to the Extra Deck of Link Monsters and their own Link Monster, this Majespecter got a rise in its playability.

Throwback Thursday this week is one of the classic Majespecters ran in the Deck back in the day and is still useful today, Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku.

Bunbuku as a Pendulum Scale has a Scale 5 and no effect. Basically the same as Porcupine, only this time we see the Majespecter high Scale for Pendulum Summons.

As a monster, Bunbuku is a Level 3 WIND Spellcaster Pendulum with 1200 ATK and 900 DEF. Not great stats, and we remain a WIND Spellcaster of course. When it is Normal or Special Summoned, you can search for any Majespecter monster from the Deck. Basically a standard classic Majespecter, this one getting you to any monster you need to also help search yet another card you are needing in the archetype. Back in the day you’d also see any generic Pendulum Deck run this just to search Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin (which wasn’t reviewed this week, as it’s being saved for a special occasion later this year) to Pendulum Summon that out before Kirin got the ban. Now you can search for Porcupine and immediately get to a Link-2 to get the ball rolling for the Deck. Being a “when” effect does mean you can miss timing if you summon this in the middle of a Chain Link, so be weary of that. Hard once per turn on the search, of course, along with the standard targeting and destruction protection from the opponent’s cards. Raccoon is now pretty much a 1-card combo for Majespecters to help get you to where you need to be thanks to the new support. If you already got your setup, then you can just search for another monster that’ll get you to a different card you need, which is just what this was for back in the day. Play 3 Bunbuku in Majespecter, though thanks to Majespecter Wind and Majespecter Crow, you technically aren’t short on ways to getting to this.

With how much I’ve been mentioning it this week, it’s no surprise that Throwback Thursday brings us Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku (thought it’d be Kirin? Ha!). Bunkuku is a level 3 WIND Spellcaster Pendulum monster with a scale of 5, and it’s blissfully searchable in many ways, including Majesty’s Pegasus, Majespecter Wind (and Majespecter Crow – Yata by proxy), and Wynn the Wind Channeler. Being level 3 is a bit harmful since you can’t make their Rank 4 monsters with it, though fortunately the deck has plenty of level 4s to use in your standard combos. Being scale 5 makes it a perfect complement to Majespecter Porcupine – Yamarashi, as that combination will summon every Majespecter monster except, ironically, Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin. As expected, it only packs a meager 1200 attack and 900 defense, as most Majespecters need to compensate for their protection with low stats.

There is no Pendulum effect (duh).

Once again, Bunbuku shares the standard Majespecter protection, being immune to both targeting and protection from your opponent (though unfortunately, your opponent can simply wait for Nue to unload their Hand Traps). Bunbuku’s single unique effect is a hard once per turn, triggering when it’s Normal or Special Summoned to search any Majespecter monster. It’s simple, but extremely effective with the new support– searching Yamarashi will immediately go into Nue to kick off your standard combo, which will generally at least end on their new sub-boss and a Field Spell of choice (Necrovalley or Secret Village of the Spellcasters). While it’ll usually be stuck in the Pendulum Zone, you can always search and summon more Bunbukus if you wish for more follow-up value. If it was legal, you can search Kirin and summon it with Majespecter Wind, though it’s arguably the less efficient method. Still, Bunbuku is now your bread and butter combo starter; max out on three copies, and consider playing Wynn if necessary to ensure you get Bunbuku.

+Efficient 1 card starter with new combos
+Easily accessible
-Weak to Ash Blossom depending on the hand
-Level 3 can be problematic in fringe scenarios
