I’ve been around long enough to have seen people playing Ally decks of basically every color combination. I never really reached a judgment on which one was the best, but Wizards of the Coast seems to be endorsing Bant colors with Katara. That’s because she’s one of a very small number of commander candidates who specifically mention Allies, and of those she’s the one with the most direct synergy with what Allies usually do. Overall she’s a pretty straightforward card – you pick your strongest triggers and try and double them as much as you can, which a lot of players will welcome for their flavorful decks in a world of Game Changers. As your commander, she does unfortunately preclude some solid options in black and red, but the times you overrun a table with Turntimber Ranger will cancel that out, and you have a lot of options in these colors to make sure you’re consistent (despite their fame, Allies still don’t actually have as many members as a lot of lesser-played kindreds).

One of the neat things about the Avatar set is that two of its mechanics, lessons and Allies, have plenty of synergy with other sets and planes. Allies, in particular, are a bit of a fan-favorite, showing up in the two Zendikar blocks and playing well with each other. Yes, a lot of them had triggers when other Allies (or they) entered, and a lot of them aren’t going to complain about having those doubled.

Katara, the Fearless is exactly what she looks like: an Ally enabler, which means she plays well with both Avatar allies and the batches of Zendikari allies. On her own, she’s nothing special, but Allies are better as a team, and she can even trigger some abilities on her entry (which get doubled). That said, I do think she’s probably more likely to sit in casual (and Commander) environments; she’s three colors for a body that doesn’t immediately impact the board without external support, and while it’s not impossible to snowball hard with her, I think the demands she has are a bit too steep to work in even Standard. Still, doubling things is fun, and she’s an efficient doubler for a tribe that loves doubling things, so here we are.

Constructed: 3.25 (she’s going to need a really strong payoff to shine here)
Casual: 4.75
Limited: 3.5 (color fixing doesn’t seem especially strong here, and she’s also going to have to find the right payoff)
Multiplayer: 3.75
Commander [EDH]: 4.5

The allies are back! Allies have become a beloved creature type over the years, and it’s not hard to see why. Cards like Hada Freeblade suddenly become quite interesting in the rigt hands, and with Katara these mechanics become even more spicy.

Bant has plenty of options for allies, and it’s no surprise that Katara seems to be designed as a commander for a Bant deck.

On her own she’s nothing to write home about, which will make her weak in Limited environments, but in casual and commander she will make for fun plays!
