I almost can’t believe this is a real card – the reference is amusing and the title is way too real. And on top of that, the game text gets out of hand very, very fast. Have you ever played with Mist-Syndicate Naga? That card doesn’t even have an evasive ability, and it still wins games in casual Magic. Impostor Syndrome is so much more versatile: you can combine it with trample, you can go for a double snowball effect with a saboteur ability, and you can practice your exponentiation with Changeling Outcast. And there are probably a few thousand more interactions I can’t think of offhand!

I know Spider-Man is associated with the quips and the wit and even sarcasm, and with some storylines that go to places that raise a serious eyebrow; but it’s important to remember that the real point of superhero comics is to have fun.

The “Spider-Men pointing at each other” meme was a very likely card to get made, and Impostor Syndrome does the job of being a flashy execution of a meme. And it certainly is flashy…if a creature lands a blow, you make a copy of that creature (if it’s not already a token). That can snowball a game quickly, duplicating potentially potent entry triggers or just making an army out of a couple choice friends. Unlike some “sit around and do nothing” enchantments, this can even start firing immediately, since it triggers on combat damage.

That being said, six mana is quite high for an enabling card, and this relies hard on having an extant army to start snowballing things. There are definitely ways to make this scary, and a certain black mage in Standard might like this as a way to pour more gasoline onto the fire…but you need to get there, and if this is a topdeck, you might not be thrilled to see this when there’s no gas to pour out.

I know this syndrome all too well. How many times haven’t I typed a card review and thought to myself ‘yeah right, nobody’s gonna accept this’. This card might therefore earn a spot in the ‘note to self’-category.

An incredibly powerful card, by the way, this enchantment. Remember last week’s overpowered Spider-Punk? Imagine playing Izzet and making a ton of copies of that card… that will go pretty quick.

The cost, however, makes it a sideboard card at best. It just takes way too much effort to bring into play and can work better as a finisher than as the main strategy to build your deck around. Still pretty cool and very much on-theme!
