Hungry Burger and Hamburger Recipe may be the easiest CoTD we will ever review, and is the Throwback Thursday choice for this cooking-themed week.
We can review both cards at once to save some time. You can summon Hungry Burger with Hamburger Recipe, or any generic Ritual Spell that involves an EARTH Ritual Monster or a Ritual Monster in general. Being able to tribute more levels than the Ritual Monster is always welcome. Both these cards are searchable by the generic Ritual Spell and Ritual Monster search cards we know and love.
With the new Nouvelles archetype, Burger gets a Counter Trap and a Ritual Monster to help it. The Ritual Monster we’re reviewing tomorrow can Special Summon Hungry Burger from the hand or Deck, while the Counter Trap can be banished off Hungry Burger’s Special Summon to tribute all monster your opponent controls. This is nice support: avoiding destruction triggers and being able to banish from the grave versus having to activate it on the Special Summon. Special Summoning from the Deck or hand is good as well. Lets face facts though: both Hungry Burger and the Ritual Spell are terrible. Not their fault, it was the DM era and caveman Yu-Gi-Oh was still in full effect. It was 2002, even an old man of Yu-Gi-Oh like I had not really started playing the game competently.
Sorry to sandwich these two together (ban pun), but they both are terrible. They weren’t played back then, and even now you likely would only see one copy of Hungry Burger in the Nouvelles deck just to fuel that Counter Trap. This burger had nothing going for it in 2002, and even now it’s barely anything within that new archetype.

Throwback Thursday will be super fast, but it made sense this week considering the archetype we’re reviewing, so here’s Hungry Burger and Hamburger Recipe.
Hamburger Recipe is a Ritual Spell that let’s you Ritual Summon a Hungry Burger by using monsters from your hand or field whose total Levels equal or exceed that of Hungry Burger. It’s the most basic design ever for a Ritual Spell, and it was the standard for 2002. Hungry Burger is a Level 6 DARK Warrior Ritual with 2000 ATK and 1850 DEF, which are pretty underwhelming stats for a Level 6 Ritual, especially with no effects, so the only real positive is DARK Warrior. These two are really just a relic from a bygone era for Rituals, back in the first set they were ever released in and the only Ritual Monster getting an actual effect was Relinquished himself. You’d have to wait a bit for other Rituals with real effects, but cards like Hungry Burger/Hamburger Recipe were what you were stuck with, so I guess the better the stats, the better the Ritual was, unless your name was Relinquished. There have been many to build a Hungry Burger Deck as a joke over the years, but with Nouvelles, you got a reason to run Hungry Burger seriously. You can hard pass on Hamburger Recipe though.

Throwback Thursday couldn’t be anything else other than the card that inspired Nouvelles, Hungry Burger, alongside its associated Ritual Spell, Hamburger Recipe. A classic Ritual monster from the DM era, Hungry Burger is a level 6 DARK Warrior Ritual monster, incidentally making it among the most searchable monsters in the game. Hamburger Recipe hardly needs explanation, as it’s a simple early Ritual Spell that will summon Hungry Burger, and it makes Hungry Burger even more searchable through Pre-Preparation of Rites. Hungry Burger itself has expected stats for a level 6 monster of its time, that is, a mediocre spread of 2000 attack and 1850 defense. It’s better than Dokurorider, but unfortunately not as good as Lycanthrope, which is quite a bit stronger and has an actual effect in exchange for losing a measly 50 defense.
Like many of the old Ritual monsters, Hungry Burger has no effect whatsoever, with its only use in ancient times being that you could hypothetically field it without a Normal Summon (at the cost of bleeding pretty much your entire hand and being vulnerable to bricking). With the Nouvelles archetype, Hungry Burger has had a bit of life breathed into it, as it’s required for the bonus effects of Chef’s Special Recipe as well as the archetype’s boss. The card itself is still rather useless, but it’s fun to play one copy in Nouvelles decks, even if it is a bit bricky. As for Hamburger Recipe, there’s absolutely zero reason to play it as Nouvelles can cheat out Hungry Burger and your Pre-Prep searches are better off used on Buerillabase anyway.
