Gordian Slicer – #ALIN-EN066

This card’s activation and effect cannot be negated. At the start of your Main Phase 1 or 2: Target any number of face-up cards on the field; for each targeted card, banish 1 card from your hand, or 6 cards from your Extra Deck, face-down, then return those targeted cards to the hand.

We end the week with the generic Spell that Konami put the most focus on, as TCG advertised it when giving set info and the OCG made it an Ultra Rare: Gordian Slicer.

Gordian Slicer is a Normal Spell whose activation and effect cannot be negated, so great start. At the start of the Main Phase 1 or 2, you can target any number of face-up cards on the field and for each target, you banish face-down either 1 card in your hand or 6 from the Extra Deck, to return those targets to the hand. It is targeting removal, but bouncing to the hand is nice when it cannot be negated. Giving up more cards in your hand to do so is a -1 since you use this and the banished card, but you can get around the minus if you instead use the Extra Deck, in which you get a max of 2 cards to bounce since you can only banish 12 of your 15 cards, and you’ll likely resort to banishing from the hand if you really need to remove more. It can be costly, but it’s a strong board breaker to clear out threats. Another card that cannot go into a lot of Decks, but if you don’t need your Extra Deck and only need a few cards to begin generating advantage for your strategy (like Regenesis or anything Stun-related for example) then you can use this. It’s not bad, just another card limited in what you can use it in, which is a nice way to design some generic cards in the future. You do have to start with it, or you can rely on it if the Battle Phase doesn’t go as you’d hope, but that’s likely what you’d do anyways instead of worrying about baiting effects. I do wish it was 5 Extra Deck cards instead of 6 so you can bounce up to 3 cards using the entire Extra Deck instead.

Ending the week is one of the less-hyped techs from Alliance Insight– it’s the Normal Spell, Gordian Slicer. Right off the bat, its activation and effect can’t be negated, so that’s how you know it’s another dedicated boardbreaker. Additionally, it can only be activated at the start of your Main Phase 1 or 2, which is usually a stipulation to make a card less versatile as a combo tool (not that I imagine you’d use Gordian Slicer as one anyway). Gordian Slicer’s actual effect will let you target any number of face-up cards and the field and return them to the hand. As a drawback, for each card you bounce, you’ll have to either banish a card from your hand or 6 cards from your Extra Deck face-down. Gordian Slicer is an interesting addition to the boardbreaker crew; it can absolutely demolish your opponent’s board, but it’ll come at the cost of either (permanently) bleeding advantage or murdering your Extra Deck (or both). Drawbacks like these aren’t new, considering Pot of Extravagance and Forbidden Droplet already exist, though it’s funny to see them on a single card. Remember, face-down banished cards are practically gone forever! While hitting a single card with Gordian Slicer isn’t a huge deal, hitting 3 or more is when things start to get a little dicey. With the advent of the Charmies, people are once again seeing the value of hand advantage, so it’s not as free as you would think. Basically, if your Extra Deck isn’t super important and you can stomach losing hand advantage, Gordian Slicer is a worthy consideration. Decks that don’t necessarily need their Extra Deck and can generate a lot of advantage use it well, like Kashtira and Mitsurugi. On the flipside, other decks are better off with Forbidden Droplet if they get large value from discards (like Crystron) or Ultimate Slayer if they can’t afford to banish from the Extra Deck often. Gordian Slicer has seen a decent bit of play despite its lukewarm reception, so as usual, it’s a tech to keep an eye on, especially as we get more decks that aren’t as reliant on the Extra Deck.
