The number of unique, mechanically-defined trinket tokens keeps climbing, and while the curators of simplicity cubes are undoubtedly not happy, I suspect people who play with Galactic Wayfarer will be. Treasure might be more straightforward, but even a solitary Lander token is a combo waiting to happen. Landfall is now a recurring mechanic not tied to Zendikar, and these tokens provide a way to get above two triggers in one turn without being forced to use one of a very specific subset of rule-changing cards. People are going to have a field day trying to figure out how best to use Landers with which other cards, and possibly a little difficulty fitting a three-mana card like the Wayfarer among their bigger threats. Even so, we shouldn’t forget that it already has efficient combat stats and your Lander is essentially free. That’s like Bloodbraid Elf, and while I can’t promise that Galactic Wayfarer will boldly go and dominate formats like my favorite Gruul threat once did, that’s not something to be written off.

Here to explore new and exciting lands, Galactic Wayfarer brings a new type of artifact token with it, Landers. Landers are pretty simple, color-agnostic basic land ramp, and the effect is quite lovely for colors that can struggle with mana fixing…but green is resolutely not one of those colors. Still, this is a card that plays well enough in practice, with a solid body that can help pay station costs and the ability to cash in the ramp whenever. Nothing about it screams all-star, but this will be a Limited workhorse and acceptable enough in a pinch if you need it elsewhere.

Constructed: 2.75 (too pricey for mana ramp, inefficient as a warm body)

We’re ending this week with another common that caught my eye during previews. This 3/3 green Human makes a Lander token upon entering.

It immediately reminded me of a few pauper staple cards that I’ve been playing (and seeing) a lot. In the popular ‘gruul ramp’ deck (or ‘gruul monsters’, sometimes ‘gruul ponza’) there are a couple of cards like this, namely Eldrazi Repurposer and Jewel Thief. This card would be a fine addition in my opinion. Having the option to bring in an extra land (instead of a Treasure token, which disappears after using it) makes for a very versatile card, while also bringing in a 3/3 body.

It has also become quite popular in drafts, for all the same reasons. Having the possibility to bring in a land helps enormously, especially if you miss a land drop on an early turn.

Recent landfall cards will also benefit greatly from this card, such as Tifa Lockhart, Scythecat Cub or Mossborn Hydra. It seems that we’re going to see a lot of landfall synergies, and I for one like it very much!
