You always have to be alert to cards that seem to set up one-card combos or synergies. We’re so used to them now that it’s easy to have them fly under the radar, but it’s important to keep paying attention. Evendo Brushrazer shows why, with abilities that not only get you extra cards but also help you pay for them. Of course, it’s also worded broadly enough that it works with a lot of pre-existing cards and themes. I’d be on the lookout for anything that lets you sacrifice things for free, like Viscera Seer; even though the triggers would not, as I understand, align to let you scry and then exile, you still get a lot of value for each cycle and sometimes even burn through your deck in a way that wins games. The only downside is its comparatively low power and toughness by the standards of aggressive decks and metagames. But that never held back cards like Goblin Rabblemaster, and the same could well be true here.

Going hard into the “land sacrifice” direction, a direction that’s classically a high-risk, high-reward approach to gameplay, Evendo Brushrazer lets you “draw” additional cards and benefit from them whenever you sacrifice permanents. And, predictably, you can benefit from them with our insect friend…by sacrificing lands. This is definitely a fraught approach, but it can pay off beautifully because getting three total mana from one land is pretty nice. There are ways to invert the downside, with cards like Desert Warfare, but an effect like this is a hard one to justify splashing. The other issue is that our insect friend is just a 2/2 with no combat abilities, and those are prone to getting squished.

In the last couple of Magic sets we’ve seen the rise of red mana dorks, starting with Endrider Catalyzer in Aetherdrift. This seems like the new addition to that list.

The cool thing is that it synergises with itself. You tap and sac a land, make mana, exile a card, then you get to play that card this turn.

The added bonus is that the exiled cards remain playable, unlike the usual effect that most of these red cards have, like Wrenn’s Resolve, where there is a limit.

It’s an interesting possible addition to extreme aggro decks, where everything is a resource to win as fast as possible.
