Your mileage may vary as far as the marker words for abilities go. Personally, I’m a fan. They give you something to latch on to not just when reading a card, but also when playing it. Among friends, it can be fun to announce what you’re doing by the marker word, and even strike a pose on your side of the table. Battle Menu gives you no less than four, which for two mana is a pretty serious bargain: Lorwyn‘s Commands all cost at least four mana, and the original Tarkir block had a couple of two-mana Commands but they were all multicolored. And on top of that, Battle Menu’s effects are shockingly efficient from top to bottom: Attack will be useful for creature decks at any stage in the game; Ability is more situational but can often save a creature that you need; Magic equals the original of its form, Alliances’ Reprisal, which you don’t actually always see; and Item is the least generally useful but can be good to have around against burn decks. You may only get one per copy, but I’m honestly a little surprised just how aggressively costed it is for all the options, and it shouldn’t have any problem finding a niche out there.

Menus are a staple of nearly every RPG, so it’s fitting that this set lets you open up the battle menu for yourself. Battle Menu is a simple, modal spell: four small-ish effects, all of which can be useful in a pinch. I feel like the most useful of these on its face will be the “Magic” effect to kill a creature with 4 or more power…but don’t underestimate the other abilities in a pinch to save your creatures or save your life in some regard, and being a removal spell that’s not dead without a creature wo remove is valuable in and of itself.
