A bit of a pun stapled to a reanimation spell, Afterlife from the Loam doesn’t get you lands, but rather the undead. Delve is a pretty interesting wrinkle in terms of letting you cheat on costs a bit more readily, and while triple black is far from ideal, it’s still manageable in the color, and you even get multiple creatures back. If you see this as a reanimation spell with upside in being able to yoink things from other graveyards, I think this will serve you well; it’s maybe a bit weaker than a “normal” reanimaton spell by virtue of its mana cost, but if you get the right thing from an opponent, this can turn into a massive blowout.
Constructed: 3 (might have some promise in reanimator decks, but I do think it’s a distant Plan C for them)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 3.5
Multiplayer: 4.25
Commander [EDH]: 4.5
Also known as “Surprisingly Actually Not A Lands Deck Card”, Afterlife from the Loam is a powerful addition to the stable of cards that turn your opponents’ things against them. We’ve come a long way since I made the worst mono-blue control deck ever for the laughs, and made it only able to win by stealing things with Dream Leash. Not only does this card scale well to any Commander bracket and any group, it works equally well against numerous styles of decks. Ambushing a reanimator deck, or one based on something like the threshold mechanic, is well worth the price of admission – and well worth setting up your own delve synergy.
