I love abilities that trigger when creatures attack (whether on the creature itself or something else). Attacking and blocking is what creatures do – it’s the thing that sets them apart from other cards. If an enchantment or artifact or land or planeswalker wants to attack, they have to either have the creature type in addition, or somehow gain it like Gideon or Treetop Village do. So you know I’m going to like Wulfgar even more than usual; and considering how important he is to Faerun’s lore, “usual” was already a lot. His ability encourages a style of deckbuilding that, as I said, is good for Magic and just fun to play with besides. Although your opponent has a little space to respond to it and try and slow or stop you, a deck that’s built around Wulfgar should have enough to make it a decent race. And if all that somehow wasn’t enough, a new card with melee (and new boost for other cards with the ability) is another shot in the arm for aggressive decks in multiplayer, which they still need!

Constructed: 2/5
Casual: 3/5
Limited: N/A (Wulfgar’s only been in a Forgotten Realms Commander deck so far)
Multiplayer: 4/5
Commander: 4/5

Like Catti-brie, Wulfgar is exclusive to the Commander subset, so no Limited score for him.

Wulfgar turned some heads already with his unique ability, so let’s talk about it. Attack-triggered abilities can be a lot of fun in the right hands, and it turns out that Wulfgar’s melee is such an ability, just for starters. In a 1-v-1 setting, it means he’s attacking as a 6/6, which isn’t terrible. Where he shines is if you build around that trigger with other friends; cards like Etali, Elder Gargaroth, Grand Warlord Radha, and Ilharg all pair quite well with Wulfgar, and he’s even in the color combination that most likes to turn sideways and smash with impunity. He’s definitely too slow to leave a mark in Legacy (though he would be great in Standard…arguably excellent, but that might hinge on the format), but he’s a formidable Commander card and an excellent one to build around at the helm of a deck.

Constructed: 1.5 (he’s a bit too expensive and a step too slow)
Casual: 5
Limited: N/A
Multiplayer: 4
Commander: 4.25
