Disciple of Nephthys
– #HISU-EN002

During your Main Phase: You can destroy 1 card in your hand, and if you do, add 1 “Nephthys” monster from your Deck to your hand, except “Disciple of Nephthys”. During the Standby Phase of your next turn after this card was destroyed by a card effect and sent to your GY: You can add 1 “Nephthys” Spell/Trap from your Deck to your hand. You can only use each effect of “Disciple of Nephthys” once per turn.

In my opinion, this week has been a little overdue, so I welcome you to Nephthys week!  The end of the year is a busy time and we’re always diving into new things, but I wanted to cover (most of) these before too much time had passed.  We open our week with Disciple of Nephthys, a new tutor of sorts for the larger, growing Nephthys archetype.  So, can we say ‘massive combos’?

Wind does very little here, as does the 0 attack (not that she’s supposed to attack), but the 2000 defense is a good thing for a Monster whose only Level 2, and Spellcaster has plenty of support also.  Once a turn, during your Main Phase, you can destroy a card in your Hand, and if successful, you can add a Nephthys Monster from your Deck to your Hand.  Nice grab effect here, adds some legs and speed to the Deck, as well as keeping your options open.

Secondly, if this card is destroyed via card effect and sent to your Graveyard, you gain a Nephthys Magic or Trap card, again from your Deck to your Hand.  This happens on your next Standby Phase after Disciple is destroyed, which I guess is fair.  Gaining say the Ritual Magic and Monster in one turn might be too much, one would seem to assume.  This effect is once per turn also.  Not a bad card at all though, being able to defend, and have a semi-restrictive double search/grab with her.

Art:  I know not why we can’t see her eyes, but this is very pretty, in a plain, autumn type of way.  4/5

Hello Pojo Fans,

Disciple of Nephthys starts the first full week of 2019, as well as a Nephthys week for us here on Pojo’s CoTD.

One of the new monsters that isn’t a Ritual for the archetype, Disciple can do a pop for one search effect using your hand. Searching any Nephthys card is very handy when you are trying to Ritual Summon. You have your dedicated searching cards for ritual spell cards, so this will get to your ritual monsters and thin your deck. During the next Standby Phase after Disciple is destroyed (if it was), you can add a Nephthys spell/trap from the deck to your hand. A search from the grave, even if it is only a one-time effect is great at thinning the deck. Instead of needing two cards to get to your ritual monster and spell, you get it both in one monster. The best card to pop in your hand is the sire of the archetype: Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys, which you will be running in a set in the deck. Cards that activate upon any kind of destruction are good to combo with this card like Shaddolls or Fire Kings. The easiest way to get both would be to pop a Disciple in your hand with Disciple on the field and get both. This is the searcher of the deck and needs to be run in 3’s.

Disciple of Nephthys is a Level 2 Wind Spellcaster-type monster with 0 Atk and 2000 Def. The stats aren’t doing this card any favors. Even for a Level 2, Wind and 0 Atk are bad. 2000 Def is ok, and Spellcaster makes sense and is well supported. The effects are very Nephthys driven. During your Main Phase, you can destroy any of your cards in your hand to search any Nephthys monster except itself. If Disciple is itself destroyed by a card effect you can search any Nephthys Spell or Trap, but you don’t get it until your next Standby Phase. I’m glad the first effect is not dependent on a Normal Summon, but the second effect is slow. Both effects are once per turn, which seems unnecessary. The second effect also distinguishes that it has to be destroyed by card effect, not battle, and sent to the grave. Sometimes cards aren’t destroyed, they’re just removed. Sometimes effects are negated and your must run Normal Summon opening play has 0 Atk. Not great for a Disciple of a formerly great Nephthys. Happy Monday!

The first full week of 2019 goes to the Nephthys archetype from Hidden Summoners, a set which we never really reviewed any cards from yet so hopefully the next two weeks might be Mayakashi or Prank-Kids, but I digress from that as the first Nephthys card we review is Disciple of Nephthys.

Disciple is a Level 2 WIND Spellcaster with 0 ATK and 2000 DEF. ATK of 0 is poor no matter what, but that 2000 DEF is very lovely to have, WIND is a weak attribute as a whole when it comes to support, but Spellcaster is well supported. Both effects of Disciple are going to be hard once per turns. The first effect being that during your Main Phase, you can destroy 1 card in your hand and if you do, you can add 1 Nephthys monster from your deck to your hand. The Nephthys archetype is based on effect destruction for various effects, so fitting that the monsters are going to have effects to destroy cards for other things, and having a searcher in any archetype is great and Disciple does the job well enough. The other effect is that during the Standby Phase of your next turn after this was destroyed by a card effect, you can add any Nephthys Spell/Trap from your deck to your hand. Once again, searching is good, but I’m not a fan of having to wait til your next Standby Phase. I get it fits with the original Sacred Phoenix, and an effect like this won’t matter if it was during your opponent’s Standby Phase, but it will for other Nephthys cards. A big flaw of the Nephthys as a whole is that their first effects aren’t the strongest as a pure deck type and the second effects are pretty slow. Disciple does have the best two effects of any of the Main Deck Nephthys monsters, since it is their searcher, but I still feel Nephthys will shine best when mixed with other decks like Kozmo, Dinosaur, or True Kings, or Fire Kings because on their own they aren’t enough to do well. No matter what you do with the Nephthys, Disciple is a must for the archetype.
