Me and the boys when someone walks into a five-for-two in Ravnica: City of Guilds limited. I’m channeling Darmok and making an obscure internet reference here, but I didn’t make up that scenario: Hex could be legitimately dangerous in its native draft and sealed formats, especially since there was a Saproling theme in the original Golgari and especially Selesnya designs. Not only was there a good chance that your opponent would accumulate some random 1/1s to give you enough targets, you could do the same thing for the same end. You’re allowed to target creatures you control, and losing one or even two of your own creatures to clear out a bunch of threatening flyers is a good deal.

Beyond those kinds of applications, Hex hasn’t seen quite as much success. Its high cost and its sometimes fiddly nature do hold it back somewhat, but it’s not entirely irrelevant at casual tables. The rise of multiplayer and Commander means it’s worth considering, as it offers a little more precision than a conventional Wrath of God variant at the cost of needing to work around hexproof.

The spell for when killing five creatures just isn’t enough.

Hex is a cute little spell: six mana, six casualties. The wording, though, is important to make note of because it doesn’t say “up to”. You must be able to target exactly six creatures as you cast this spell, and if there aren’t enough creatures to target on your opponents’ boards, your own creatures are fair game.

I will say that Hex is a spell that isn’t bad out-and-out, but it is pretty outclassed in modern days. There are cheaper board wipes (even in black), and the targeting demands risk this becoming a dead draw if you don’t have enough targets. There are definitely worse ways to get your murder on, and this is efficient for its cost, but it’s just not that good a spell in this day and age.

Constructed: 1.75 (too expensive for a board wipe or mass removl particularly one that doesn’t kill everything)
Casual: 3.5
Limited: 2.75 (situational, but it can work)
Multiplayer: 3.25
Commander [EDH]: 3 (keep in mind that, even here, you might not have enough targets)

The card as we see it here shows the group of supervillains called ‘Sinister Six’. A short introduction.

The top row from left to right features Vulture, Doctor Octopus and Mysterio. They’re two scientists (should I add ‘mad’ or was that implied) and a former illusionist. They’re some of the oldest and most iconic villains Spider-Man has ever had to face.

The bottom row shows us Sandman, Electro and Hobgoblin. That last one was not one of the original members of the Sinister Six, unlike the others. He is, however, a very iconic one.

The art is from the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #337 from the early 1990’s and was part of the story arc ‘The Return of the Sinister Six’.

Hex is an iconic card that debuted in Ravnica: City of Guilds in 2005. It hardly sees play, but it’s a wonderful show of force. Pay six, destroy six. It’s blunt, it’s brutal, it’s straightforward. The flavor text of the original card reflects the sentiment: “When killing five just isn’t enough.”

A great combination of Magic’s rich history with the equally rich history of Spider-Man.

On a final note: the group itself has received a card as well, where you get to return six cards from the graveyard to the battlefield. Behold the Sinister Six!!!
