I always feel that Spider-Man uses a lot more adjectives than any other superhero. Think about it: it’s not common practice to open the title of a Batman comic series or graphic novel with a word that describes Batman. To be fair, it does often catch attention, and so does Sensational Spider-Man’s text box. None of the words down there are anything we haven’t seen before in Magic, but they add up to do something a little unusual. He’s clearly designed to capture a particular flavor, and particular thing that Spider-Man does, but stun counters are rarely used for anything other than their obvious function. And he’s also designed broadly enough that he works with cards other than himself. It’s worth noting, too, that they held very little back on the payoff: don’t misread it as “draw a card”, it’s “draw up to three cards” when you have enough stun counters. That might be one of the best rates for a saboteur/attack trigger creature ever printed.

I’m still waiting for the Antidisestablishmentarian Spider-Man graphic novel.

This is part of the sub-set called Spider-Man Eternal, and these cards are not going to be Standard-legal and are legal in Vintage, Legacy, and Commander. If it’s a spider logo, it’s an Eternal card, while the mask is a main-set, Standard-legal card.

The next crossover set, Spider-Man is a pretty interesting choice for such a set, given that there’s not a ton of…well, magic running around. Stuff that looks magical, but here we are. Of course, the titular partially arachnid super-hero makes multiple appearances in this tranche of cards, so let’s talk about the first one we got to meet.

Sensational Spider-Man is, all things considered, a pretty straightforward execution of his web-slinging. An attack lets you tie something up in webbing (stun counter), and then you can parley stun counters into card draw. Notably, the stun counters can be anywhere, and things that come into play with stun counters are fair game, so you can use the web-slinger to free up your things and freeze things from opponents. I don’t think this has Constructed juice, as while stun counters have been creeping up in prevalence, there aren’t enough of them to justify a three-mana enabler/cantripper that dies to nearly every relevant removal spell, but there are definitely some interesting things he might have up his sleeves in Commander.

Constructed: 1.75
Casual: 3.5
Limited: 3.75 (soft removal is still removal, if you’re lucky enough to open this)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.75 (seems like a fun value commander, but just don’t get too lost in the stun counter sauce)

As James already mentioned, this card will not be Standard-legal.

Spider-Man, the latest in Wizards’ travels into other Universes, is even more of a sidetrack than Lord of the Rings or Assassin’s Creed. Apart from the fact that Spidey’s powers are not magical (they were the result of a bite from a radioactive spider) there is not a lot of magic going around in New York City. Therefore it feels a bit tricky to fill an entire set with cards that are more like some of the Secret Lair sets (ie. The Walking Dead). The (pre)sales don’t mirror this sentiment however, as it seems Spider-Man will be another slam dunk for WotC.

This card seems, for lack of a better word, underwhelming. A 3/3 for three mana with an attack trigger is nice, surely, but one would expect the namesake card of one of the most popular comic book series of all time to be a little more powerful (like the spectacular). The tap-and-stun is nice and so is the addition of card draw, but to build a deck around it seems unlikely.
