Despite having some pretty straightforward game text and not particularly efficient stats, Zidane does have a couple of things going for him as a build-around card. His functions are comparable to those of Zealous Conscripts, albeit in two colors; he goes infinite with all the same things that card does. And it’s worth noting that his Treasure-creating ability is separate from his stealing ability – it feels like they’re connected when you cast him, but they don’t automatically have to be. He gives you a degree of countermeasure when your opponent steals things from you (even with their own copy of Zidane!), and there might be a combo out there with a card like Zedruu the Greathearted. One thing I’ve learned is that you never bet against Zedruu turning up in a combo somewhere.

The roguish main character of Final Fantasy IX, Zidane Tribal gets a card that feels true to form. He’s a thief who’s good at making off with things…so you get a creature that’s good at making off with things. Groundbreaking, I know.

That said, while Zidane, Tantalus Thief may not have infinite combo potential, he’s still a decently strong uncommon. He takes a creature for a turn and lets it crash in with haste and lifelink, and his passive gives you treasure when they get their things back…or they take your things. One treasure is hardly going to deter someone, but it can be pretty efficacious in the right circumstances.

Zidane isn’t phenomenal, but he’s a pretty solid Threaten effect with a bit of upside, leaving a body behind afterwards. A 3/3 won’t win awards, but bodies can be blinked to make off with even more things, and he’s a pretty good enabler or way to thwart an opponent’s strategy.

Constructed: 3 (probably a bit too weak, but I suppose players on a budget can abuse this)
