Hello Pojo Fans,

Throwback Thursday, Magistus style, with the obvious choice, one that the meta has used as an easy Link-1 option: Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden.

Requiring any Level 4 or lower Spellcaster to be Link Summoned, Artemis works best with Magistus (obviously), as she can equip herself to any Magistus monster that Normal or Special Summons themselves. Once she’s equipped, Artemis nets you a Magistus RoTA each turn she remains on the field. Summoning her once per turn is a restriction that was needed otherwise Magistus could likely summon out all three copies of her or summon two and equip one directly from the Extra Deck using Zoroa. Speaking of which, she is easily his best friend, as just by summoning him equips her to him and then gets you a search to continue the Magistus moves (new version of Crowley). Endymion, the Magistus of Mastery can do something like Zoroa, except he can pop a face-up Spell you control, destroy it, draw a card, then place a card in the hand to the bottom of the Deck. Not as powerful as Zoroa Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower Spellcaster from hand or grave (effects negated) but a draw is a draw, and either monster is getting the benefit from Artemis.

For many, Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden was an easy Link-1 Spellcaster to go into to get to Selene, but she is a weapon in Magistus with or without summoning her. Also, with Magistus Invocation existing, her being equipped off the cuff by either of the above two monsters makes the requirements for three of the four Magistus Fusion Monsters…though her searching Crowley and his Special Summon ability which leads into his Fusion ability solves that.

Throwback Thursday brings us to one of the best Extra Deck monsters for Magistus, and something you’ll see Spellcaster Decks run to throw a Spellcaster into the grave before making S:P Little Knight: Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden.

Artemis is a Link-1 LIGHT Spellcaster with 800 ATK and an arrow pointing up. The arrow ain’t good, and neither is the ATK stat, but being a LIGHT Spellcaster is a plus. The material is any Level 4 or lower Spellcaster monster, which is why you see this ran in Spellcaster Decks, just to throw the Level 4 or lower body in the graveyard and maybe use this as Link Material for S:P Little Knight for the full benefits (since Spirit with Eyes of Blue is the other option for Spellcasters and that locks you to Dragons while on the field). If another Magistus monster is Special Summoned while you control this monster, you can equip it to said monster, or one of choice if you summoned multiples. It accomplishes the gimmick of Magistus by itself at least, and while equipped you get to search for a Magistus monster from the Deck each turn, so it’s certainly where you want it to be in Magistus, but even if you don’t summon it, there are many ways in the archetype to equip it from the Extra Deck or graveyard. HOPT on each effect and you can only Special Summon one of these a turn so you don’t get to throw all your Level 4 or lower Spellcasters into the grave for free. It’s been a solid Spellcaster support card for years just for being a Link-1, giving all the benefits linking off a monster would have. Invoked loves this to send Aleister to grave and have a LIGHT on the field for Mechaba. In Magistus, it’s extremely important for being a monster searcher and one of two Links the archetype has, and the only TCG legal one currently. You only need 1 usually, but it’s had a ton of utility over the years in Spellcaster Decks, and it’s great for Magistus in general.

Advanced Rating: 4.5/5

Art: 5/5 Top notch artwork for a younger version of Selene.

Throwback Thursday brings us one of the most least broken Link 1 monsters of our time, none other than Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden. Artemis is a Link 1 LIGHT Spellcaster Link monster with a single upwards arrow, which isn’t particularly great but fortunately it’s not that relevant for Magistus combos. Notably, it takes any level 4 or lower Spellcaster, which should be broken. However, thanks to Konami’s rather questionable treatment of Spellcasters, it’s really not that problematic and for the most part is only usable in Magistus and its associated archetypes. Finally, Artemis has a flimsy 800 attack, which is to be expected for a Link 1 not named Charles the Great.

Unsurprisingly, Artemis can only be Special Summoned once per turn as a failsafe for any looping shenanigans, and it comes with 2 hard once per turn effects of its own. The first effect triggers if you Normal or Special Summon any Magistus monster, letting you target and Equip Artemis to that monster. If you know Magistus, you already know how this is helpful, but if you don’t, that’s why we have Artemis’s second effect! As long as it’s Equipped (to any monster, weirdly enough, not that it makes a huge difference), you can search any Magistus monster. This means both Zoroa, Magistus of Flames and Endymion, the Magistus of Mastery can kick off your combos by Equipping themselves with Artemis to search Crowley, the Gifted Magistus– and, once we actually get it, Spoon. Artemis is also a convenient Link monster to have around so that Zoroa, the Magistus Conflagrant Calamity can shut down your opponent’s Link monsters. You’re probably also familiar with Artemis being a perfect Link 1 to go into with Aleister the Invoker and easily summon Invoked Mechaba, though you trade in convenience for the flexibility of Salamangreat Almiraj and Secure Gardna being able to make Invoked Purgatrio as well. Overall, while it was always a staple playmaker for Magistus, it’s an even more important one now; even though you only need 1 copy, you’ll probably want to run 2 or even 3 just for follow-up. Maybe a Link 1 that takes any low-level Spellcaster will completely snap a deck in half in the future, but that day is not today; I’d be more concerned about Selene!

+Integral combo piece for Magistus
+Easy Link 1 for many Spellcaster decks
-Not that much value on its own when summoned
-Not too uncommon to run out of copies to Equip from the Extra Deck

Advanced: 4/5
Art: 4/5 I can’t say much here or Endymion would try to attack me.
