Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa – #ALIN-EN090

If this card is Normal or Special Summoned, or if this card is Tributed: You can add 1 “Mitsurugi” monster from your Deck to your hand, except “Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa”. If another Reptile monster(s) you control would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can Tribute this card instead. You can only use each effect of “Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

More Mitsurugi monsters? Yup, not just Saji, Kusanagi and the Rituals (not that they needed anymore) so lets get into some of the new stuff with Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa.

Like Saji and Kusanagi before, Aramasa gains an ability off a Normal or Special Summon or being tributed. The archetype needed a dedicated RoTA, and that is what Aramasa is. Any Mitsurugi monster from the Deck can be added to the hand. This helps you use less cards on fetching your Ritual Monsters, but can also get you to something like Saji and Kusanagi to be tributed in your hand for a Ritual Summon. Activating Prayers to tribute Aramasa lands you a double monster search, while Magatama trades a Reptile in your hand for destroying a card on the field, or acts as a Ritual Summon in the form of a Quick-Play.

Same second effect as Saji and Kusanagi: ability to tribute itself to protect another Reptile from destruction. This is like the first versions of the Six Samurai that could do the same to protect their allies, only better because of the ability to pay you back when tributed.

Pure Mitsurugi now have a dedicated searcher for monsters, Spell/Trap, and gathering a card back from the grave or banished area. This doesn’t boost the archetype’s performance as it has been doing great as a tech choice for other archetypes as well as a stand-alone archetype since its release. Will this card be played? Of course. This is merely insurance if Mitsurugi get hit on the next ban list.

Final bit from Alliance Insight before we move forward as we arguably save the best for last with the new Mitsurugi cards, starting with the Deck’s 3rd Level 4: Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa.

Aramasa is a Level 4 DARK Reptile with 1200 ATK and 900 DEF. Not great in the stat department, but DARK is always great and Reptile has good generic stuff like King of the Feral Imps, Snake Rain, and even Ogdoadics. Upon Normal or Special Summon, or if this card is tributed, you can add a Mitsurugi monster from the Deck to the hand. Finally a monster searcher on a Level 4 we can Normal/Special to go with the backrow searcher in the last set. This can help get to more Mitsurugi names that’ll extend your plays or the Rituals you want to summon from the hand. You of course can’t search for another Aramasa, which is fine. Second effect is the same as the other Level 4 Mitsurugis, where it protects another Reptile(s) from destructiton via battle or effect by tributing itself, which means you can get the search afterwards while protecting your monster. Aramasa is a pretty good consistency boost for Mitsurugi, helping take part in it being a popular engine right now. The engine only really needs 1, but pure Mitsurugi can stick to 2-3.

The big guys themselves! Defying all expectations as both a Ritual deck and a TCG exclusive, this week we’re continuing our Alliance Insight coverage with the second wave of Mitsurugi support, which has quickly become the deck to beat for the last few formats and is still a solid meta contender going into Justice Hunters format. Our first card is Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Aramasa, a level 4 DARK Reptile monster like the other small Mitsurugi monsters. Mitsurugi Prayers and all of the Mitsurugi Ritual monsters can access it alongside King of the Feral Imps and the other generic Reptile searchers. Aramasa has probably the worst stats among the Mikoto crew, with only 1200 attack and 900 defense, but you’ll be relying on your Ritual monsters for your offensive muscle anyway.

Aramasa comes with 2 hard once per turn effects; the first is basically an inverted copy of Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji, triggering if it’s Normal or Special Summoned or Tributed to let you search any Mitsurugi monster. If you don’t have it yet, the number 1 target is the deck’s new sub-boss monster, Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi (yeah, spoilers again because the card’s just that good and important), which starts your combos all by itself; otherwise, you’ll stick to whatever you need for the combo. In my experience, it’s nice to get to Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi so that you can Tribute from the deck. Aramasa’s other effect is nothing we haven’t seen before, shared by all of the level 4 Mitsurugi monsters to let you Tribute it to save one of your Reptile monsters from being destroyed by battle or card effect. Though it’s not protection to count on, it’s definitely very annoying when it comes up to protect your boss monsters in a pinch, and it’ll conveniently trigger the first effect to get yet another search– part of the reason Mitsurugi has such absurd grinding ability! The only real weakness of Aramasa is common among the deck in general: being very weak to the dreaded Droll & Lock Bird. Considering it directly accesses Habakiri, Aramasa is arguably the most important level 4 Mitsurugi monster; more pure builds should play 3, though in hybrid builds like Ryzeal, your search power is so good that you can easily get away with just 1 if you need space.

+Searches Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi to kickstart your combos
+Insanely accessible as a Reptile monster
-Protection isn’t super reliable
-Vulnerable to Droll & Lock Bird like the rest of the deck
