Chasma, Dragon Ruler of Auroras – #ALIN-EN047

2 Level 7 Dragon monsters
(Quick Effect): You can send 1 Level 7 “Dragon Ruler” monster from your Deck to the GY and detach 1 material from this card; this effect becomes that sent monster’s effect that discards itself to activate. If this card is destroyed by battle, or if this card in its owner’s possession is destroyed by an opponent’s card effect: You can Special Summon 1 Level 7 “Dragon Ruler” monster from your GY or banishment. You can only use each effect of “Chasma, Dragon Ruler of Auroras” once per turn.

Eclipse, Dragon Ruler of Catastrophes – #ALIN-EN048

2 Level 7 Dragon monsters
If this card is Xyz Summoned: You can target 1 Level 4 or lower “Dragon Ruler” monster in your GY or banishment; Special Summon 1 Level/Rank 7 “Dragon Ruler” monster that is mentioned on that targeted monster from your Deck or banishment, then shuffle the targeted monster into the Deck. When your opponent activates a Spell/Trap Card or effect (Quick Effect): You can detach 2 materials from this card; negate the activation, and if you do, banish that card. You can only use each effect of “Eclipse, Dragon Ruler of Catastrophes” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Back-to-Back days with a two-for-one special? Yup! Lets review the new Xyz Dragon Rulers for the new baby Dragon Rulers: Chasma, Dragon Ruler of Auroras & Eclipse, Dragon Ruler of Catastrophes.

Starting with Chasma, we’ve got a 3000ATK Rank 7 that is generic in materials, perfect for the Dragon Ruler archetype as they throw some other Level 7’s like Kashtira into their builds. A Foolish Burial of a Dragon Ruler monster tied into their detach effect is new and preps your grave for either banishing to summon or Special Summon the one you just sent to the grave. Chasma gaining the Dragon Ruler’s discard effect as the effect they are activating is highly versatile. Not only as a Quick Effect, allowing you to interrupt your opponent’s turn with something like an imitation Blaster or Tempest effect, but you can also get the most out of your new Dragon Ruler if it were being outed by an effect. The added bonus that you don’t have to discard in addition to get the imitation of the discard effect ensures you aren’t investing too much into that effect.

Whenever destroyed Chasma will get you a Dragon Ruler from the grave or banished to the field. You do have to possess Chasma if it is being destroyed by a card effect and it has to be an opponent’s card effect, but that’s okay. This effect gets you a big body back on the field to at least body block an incoming attack, but can also get back something that is banished so it can go to the grave and be of use to you again. On top of that, if your opponent cannot out it and it hits their End Phase that Dragon Ruler is bouncing back to your hand.

Nebulus can set this summon and its own Rank 7 up through its discard to Special Summon from the banished area, while Spectral can get the Dragon Rulers to your hand so you can discard and use their effects, then Special Summon them from the grave to set up this summon. Either way, this card imitating Dragon Rulers and setting up your grave for more summons adds speed to the archetype.

Eclipse time! Eclipse, Dragon Ruler of Catastrophes is 300ATK weaker than Chasma, but upon Xyz Summon can immediately summon a Level/Rank 7 Dragon Ruler as long as you can target a Level 4 or lower Dragon Ruler in your grave or banished. The Dragon Ruler has to mention the one you are attempting to Special Summon, so you’re calling the bigger Dragon Ruler because the smaller Dragon Ruler misses them. The bigger Dragon Ruler is summoned from the Deck or banished, so you do have some flexibility where you want to summon, though you’ll always choose the Deck to thin and give your grave another target. The inclusion of Rank 7 does allow for you to summon either of the new Xyz Dragon Rulers from the banished area to match the smaller Dragon Ruler you targeted. While they won’t have their Xyz effect, they are still a strong body on the field.

Eclipse spends both its materials to negate a Spell/Trap or effect and banish it. I’m always on the fence about using both materials for one negation, but this archetype was in need of negation power in-house, and even with it being a one-time use, including monster effect(s) into the fold helps even this out. Save the negation for something big like having Nibiru dropped on you or stopping your opponent’s combo attempt at the “choke point”. Quick Effect like Chasma makes Eclipse a powerful weapon even if it can only negate once.

Special Summon ability with a potential deck thin to add a big body on the field in addition to a negation and banish ability, Eclipse is a powerful addition to the archetype. It may not be an omni-negate, but the Dragon Rulers can do that through other monsters. Both new Xyz Monsters do a great job interacting with the opponent and giving the archetype some much-needed archetype support.

We saw the babies yesterday, now we double down again today to look at the two new big Dragon Rulers to round out the six main Attribues: Chasma, Dragon Ruler of Auroras and Eclipse, Dragon Ruler of Catastrophes.

Chasma is a Rank 7 LIGHT Dragon Xyz with 3000 ATK and 1600 DEF. Great stats on a Rank 7, plus another LIGHT Dragon is great. Materials are any 2 Level 7 Dragons, so sticking to a Dragon strategy like the Rulers. First effect is a Quick Effect to send a Level 7 Dragon Ruler from the Deck to the graveyard and detach a material from this card to copy the effect it has when it discards itself. First off, the detach and send being a cost is nice to get bodies in the graveyard. Off this, you can now do a Foolish Burial of any monster by sending Tidal, a Monster Reborn of any monster by sending Redox, search any Dragon by sending Tempest, and destroy a card on the field by sending Blaster. Blaster’s effect is probably the best use of the Quick Effect this has, or you can combo Tidal and Redox to summon something like Archlord Kristya, which you could use since it’s a LIGHT monster for Spectral. You could also just search a Dragon thanks to Tempest and extend your combos as well. The second effect triggers if destroyed by battle or in your possession thanks to the opponent, letting you summon a Level 7 Dragon Ruler from your graveyard or banishment, so it at least replaces itself if destroyed, but I doubt that’s how this will leave the field. HOPT on each effect, thankfully letting you use both in the same turn unlike the old Dragon Rulers. Chasma is pretty key to a dedicated Dragon Ruler strategy since it makes the discard effects of the four main Dragon Rulers always be options, with three being good for your turn, while Blaster can be held for the opponent’s. Worth playing a few copies in a dedicated Dragon Ruler Deck.

Art: 4.5/5 Honestly them finally doing LIGHT and DARK Rulers gave us some of the cooler looking Dragons.

As for Eclipse now, Rank 7, DARK Dragon, 2700/1900 stats. A small debuff, but still impressive stats and we got the better combination of Type and Attribute. 2 Level 7 Dragons to summon it, of course. If Xyz Summoned, you can target a Level 4 or lower Dragon Ruler in your graveyard/banishment to Special Summon a Level/Rank 7 Dragon Ruler with the same Attribute from your Deck or banishment and the baby Dragon Ruler you initially targeted returns to the Deck. So you recycle your baby Rulers and get to your big Rulers with great ease to keep making your Rank 7 monsters. The other effect is a Quick Effect when the opponent activates a Spell/Trap, detaching 2 materials to negate the activation and banish it. Super simple Spell/Trap negation is nice, so makes sense that this isn’t generic to not give Rank 7 turbo Decks that aren’t Dragons this negation. HOPT on both effects. Eclipse is solid for extending your plays even more and having Spell/Trap negation. Another Xyz you could use a few copies of.

We covered their baby versions, so now we have to cover the adult versions too– today’s cards are Chasma, Dragon Ruler of Auroras and Eclipse, Dragon Ruler of Catastrophes, upgrading into a pair of Rank 7 Dragon monsters that are once again LIGHT and DARK respectively. Both of them will take 2 level 7 Dragon monsters respectively, so naturally they’re meant for Dragon Ruler proper, but any deck that can plausibly field level 7 Dragons can make them, like Armed Dragon Thunder, Dragonmaid, and Dragon Link. Chasma is ironically the more offensive of the duo, with a solid 3000 attack and a less-than-stellar 1600 defense, though Eclipse’s stats aren’t bad either, with 2700 attack and a still-bad 1900 defense. At least they’re good beaters!

Chasma, miraculously, simply has 2 hard once per turn effects this time around, though don’t get too excited because the second effect isn’t all that hot. What we’re really looking at is Chasma’s first effect, a Quick Effect to send a level 7 Dragon Ruler monster from your deck to the Graveyard and detach an Xyz material to copy that Dragon Ruler’s discard effect. All of the Dragon Rulers are useful depending on the scenario; Tempest, Tidal, and Redox are all excellent combo pieces, and Tempest in particular is one of the only reliable ways to actually search Spectral and Nebulus, or branch out into virtually any Dragon deck combo imaginable (I have a particular drudge against a Twitter combo showcase that searched Parlor Dragonmaid…). Some combo lines will send Tidal so that you can send pretty much any monster you want, most infamously Archlord Krystia, which you can later revive with Redox (or by copying Redox during your opponent’s turn). Most of the time, you’ll have enough bodies to make Eclipse, which will give you the choice of leaving them for a solid board or going for the new boss monster if you know your opponent has no way to overcome a strong Towers. Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos is largely irrelevant for combos, but since this is a Quick Effect, you can send it for disruption, or if it’s turn 3, you can always use it to break boards. This effect needed to be cracked, since Dragon Ruler technically can make it easily, but without Spectral, you bleed quite a bit of card advantage to make it in the first place. I’ll also have to correct my misinformation from yesterday– for some reason I had forgotten that Chasma needed to detach a material, so I thought Spectral could revive it. Hey, it was months ago! In any case, it’s still a very strong effect even if you fire it off once considering you’re still getting a Dragon Ruler in the Graveyard at the minimum thanks to it sending for cost. Chasma’s other effect is lifted straight from 2013, triggering if it’s destroyed by battle or your opponent’s card effect to let you Special Summon a level 7 Dragon Ruler from either your Graveyard or banishment. It’s a simple floating effect so that you can stay in the game even as your board gets dismantled, but I’m never a fan of reactive floating! Granted, again, I can see why they thought it would be fine to exclude Chasma from “one effect per turn”. The first effect more than makes up for it, at least. Chasma’s such a strong combo piece that I’d consider running multiple copies, especially since it doesn’t really have a way to get Xyz materials back after being revived by Spectral, but you only need 1.

+Amazing combo piece that can fulfill a variety of roles and branch into other Dragon deck combos
+Versatile as a disruption if necessary
-Not easy to make efficiently without Spectral or outside level 7 Dragon engines
-Floating effect relies on your opponent

Advanced: 4.5/5
Art: 3.5/5 I like the colors, though I’m not sure about it looking a bit like a tapeworm. I guess that’s the logical evolution of Spectral.

========================================================

Nebulus upgrades into Eclipse instead, which also has 2 hard once per turn effects– thankfully, this time around both are pretty useful, though the second one probably won’t come up on turn 1 anyway. Eclipse’s first effect triggers on Xyz Summon, letting you target a level 4 or lower Dragon Ruler monster in your Graveyard or banishment, then Special Summon the level or Rank 7 Dragon Ruler monster mentioned in its text from your deck or banishment by shuffling that baby Dragon Ruler into the deck. Basically, you recycle a baby Dragon Ruler to summon their corresponding adult form from your deck or banishment (or just banishment, if it’s Nebulus or Spectral). This is great for getting more bodies to go into Chasma if you haven’t summoned it yet, but in general bodies are always appreciated with Dragon Ruler. Its other effect is no slouch either– it’s a Quick Effect that responds to your opponent’s Spell or Trap card or effect to negate and banish it by detaching 2 Xyz materials. There’s a weird amount of banishing negates lately, but I guess I can’t complain! What I can complain about is the fact that it only hits backrow; on its own this isn’t an issue at all, but it feels like a bit of a waste since banishing monsters is much more impactful. Much like with Chasma, it’s less about the card itself being bad and more about issues with Dragon Ruler as a deck; again, making it in the first place requires a bit of effort unless you open Spectral, and reviving it often doesn’t do much aside from fueling the new Dragon Ruler boss monster. It’s not as good as Chasma, but you’ll definitely still run 1 copy at least, if only to make the new boss.

+Good extending effect to field more bodies for Link or Xyz Summons
+Backrow negate that can remove troublesome cards
-(Again) Not easy to make efficiently without Spectral or outside level 7 Dragon engines
-Limited usage when revived
