Hello Pojo Fans,

Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice wraps up the week and is the newest support to the surprisingly good Shining Sarcophagus archetype.

Discard to Special Summon is always a good extender ability and when you do this her name becomes “Dark Magician Girl”, giving her all the support that comes with that title. As always I’m not sure how much of that support you’re going to play in Shining Sarcophagus, or any archetype that you may splash this engine into.

When you Normal or Special Summon her, she will get you to Shining Sarcophagus, which allows for the two best monsters in the archetype to Special Summon themselves (Gandora-G and Dark Magician). Before Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice, there was only Gadget Trio that could search Shining Sarcophagus, and while you could search for it off Gadget Trio’s Special Summon as well as Normal Summon, the Trio could also get you instead a Spell/Trap that mentions Shining Sarcophagus, now you can use them for that. The ATK gain she gains is switched from Dark Magician and Magician of Black Chaos to any monster in the grave that mentions Shining Sarcophagus. You are already going to gain more ATK from this than you would with the original DMG. We’ve mentioned three monsters already, and if you used DMGtMA already she does count herself, so there’s four.

Great extender, great search option for the archetype, enables Trio to search something else, and has a better ATK gain than the original DMG. Lets not lose sight though, the combo of the archetype remains Gandora-G and Dark Magician the Magician of Black Magic clearing the board, summoning two copies of that magician and making a Rank 8 alongside the original Dark Magician the Magician of Black Magic. It was only a matter of time before he would be paired up again with his apprentice and she did not disappoint for the archetype.

We end the week off with DMG finally joining Yugi’s Shining Sarcophagus Deck with Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice.

Magician’s Apprentice is a Levele 6 DARK Spellcaster with 2000 ATK and 1700 DEF. Not the best in terms of stats, but Level 6+ DARK Spellcasters are great to take note of now with Dark Magician of Destruction coming at some point. You can Special Summon this from the hand by discarding a card, and if you do, its name becomes Dark Magician Girl. Main part here is the easy summoning condition that’s similar to Apprentice Illusion Magician, though in this case you can only summon her once a turn this way. Upon Normal or Special Summon, you can add a Shining Sarcophagus from your Deck to your hand, which is extremely important for the Shining Sarcophagus strategy to get to the most important card in the Deck while using the other searchers the archetype has for your other play enablers. HOPT on this effect, and she gains 300 ATK for each monster that mentions Shining Sarcophagus in the graveyards, which is likely only relevant for you unless you do find the mirror match. This new DMG is what Shining Sarcophagus needed, since the Sarc is so important that you need as many ways to get to it as possible. It’ll also add the Dark Magician of Destruction play to Shining Sarcophagus to summon a Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon as well. It’s a staple for Shining Sarcophagus and can help make Shining Sarc an engine in Dark Magician potentially.

Shining Sarcophagus isn’t done yet because it’s getting another Dark Magician-adjacent support in Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice (normally I just call it Sarc DMG in casual conversation, but for professionalism I’ll just call it Apprentice…), a level 6 DARK Spellcaster monster (very important!). As it’s a Magician Girl monster, Berry Magician Girl is your main way to reliably search it outside of Shining Sarcophagus and its associated cards since, spoilers, it mentions Shining Sarcophagus. Once again we have a retrain that takes the stats of the original, with a rather low 2000 attack and 1700 defense. Don’t worry guys, all you have to do is fill your Graveyard with Dark Magicians…

Despite all the text, Apprentice has 3 very simple effects; the first will allow you to summon it from your hand once per turn by discarding any card, making its name become the original Dark Magician Girl in the process. Discarding to Special Summon itself seems to be a recurring theme for Dark Magician Girl and its associated monsters, but it’s hard to complain when it’s a level 6 DARK Spellcaster body that will conveniently be fodder for the new Dark Magician Fusion monster, letting you easily access multiple Dark Magician tools in Shining Sarcophagus and Dark Magician itself if you’re willing to run a small Shining Sarcophagus package. Additionally, Dark Magician hybrids can take advantage of the name change to use Sage’s Stone or get additional draws using Soul Servant. That’ll bring us to Apprentice’s second effect, triggering on Normal or Special Summon to search Shining Sarcophagus. For Shining Sarcophagus proper, this effect needs no explanation– it’ll access all of your other Shining Sarcophagus monsters, particularly Gandora-G the Dragon of Destruction and Dark Magician the Magician of Black Magic, for even better consistency than before. In Dark Magician hybrids, it’ll get you some draw fodder for Magicians’ Souls and discard fodder to recuperate the discard cost of Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon, and Shining Sarcophagus will supply a Spell card activation for the Dark Magician Fusion as well. Apprentice’s final effect is lifted straight from the original DMG, boosting its attack by 300 for each monster in either Graveyard that mentions Shining Sarcophagus. This is a lot easier to get high attack with than the original, but for the most part it’s not particularly relevant unless you really, really need to get over a monster with high attack. Overall, a huge consistency booster for Shining Sarcophagus and an enabler for the upcoming Dark Magician engine; whether the latter will be good or not remains to be seen, but either way you’ll be playing 3 copies.

+Fantastic consistency booster and free body for Shining Sarcophagus
+Enables Dark Magician of Destruction by itself
-Discard can be a little annoying
-Doesn’t count as Dark Magician Girl in the Graveyard
