Card Comparison: Field Disruption, the Fire Way
Images from Wizards Duel Master site

8/30/05

Hello Pojo People! Here’s my next Featured Article. This time, we stray away from going inside the game, and begin another segment, known as Card Comparison. This is where we take a specific type of card type (based on effect, civ, cost, etc…) and we put the light on the cards in the family.

Today, we’ll take on one of the more used families of cards. Let’s go…

First is the Civilization: Fire

Second is the Type of card: Spell

Third is the type of effect it does: Clearing the field of monsters

Ok, so let’s see. We have a Fire spell that can clear the field of monsters…What ever could it be? Or a better question, what could they be? I’m thinking of 3 different ones in our current library of cards. One would be our well overused and abused Searing Wave.

Waves of Fire?...Who woulda guessed?...

searing_wave

Searing Wave…Searing…Wave…Good ol’ Wave…

What can we really say about this card? I mean, we at first thought it wasn’t as big as a card as it could be, when it first came out, then we all began to welcome it with open arms. And it’s served us well. This card is the reason why I’ve decided to do this article. Articles give me a chance to delve deep into the different cards of the game. So it’s beneficial to you and a learning experience for me! Everyone wins! Hurray for Zoidberg!

For those unfamiliar with the card, it’s amazing. Just know that. At the cost of 1 shield, if you have one, and 5 mana, you blow away all of your opponents monsters that has 3000 power or less. Mass removal of monsters that fit in to a category that most monsters in today’s decks use…Good?

There are subtle benefits to the card that we will put into a chart later on, but we’ll describe them here.

~ The card is specific to your opponent’s monsters. Your monsters are apparently safe. They don’t deserve to burn…

~ The card has the limit of 3000. 3000 is a nice number as it still takes down those 2000 attackers, like Corile and Hulcus, but also takes down those 3000 monsters like Hunter/Madrillon Fish and Barkwhip Powered up 1000 attackers *you know, the 2nd effect that no one really remembers…*

~ You still get to use the card if you don’t have a shield to give up. That can help.

~ It’s the cheapest of the 3 different cards. 5 mana is still a very decent price to pay for a card.

There are negatives too…

~ I bet we all came across the Searing wave problem where the shield we hit was a shield trigger. Not to mention a good one. “I play searing wave and I kill the Shield…Terror Pit?”

~ Not all monsters are 3000 or less. This card will not take down the Merfolks and Barkwhips running about.

~ Not a shield trigger, so this card will not save your live when you need it.

~ Needs to be used at appropriate times. When used, you must make sure you can control the game in your favor from that point on, because SW is your basic saving grace.

Searing wave is the most used, but is it because it’s been hiding its new brother and its long distant cousin from sets before? Let’s move on then. Our Next card had been recently released as a Rare in our latest set, to acclaim the rarest of the 3 by actual rarity. Welcome to the land of Apocalypse Vise.

Apocalypse Vise? Why a Vise? The Monkey Wrench is where it is…

apocalypse_vise

The newest kid on the block, Apocalypse Vise. It’s looking pretty good, and seeing some decent play, but can it compete to Wave? Can it even be next to it?

For those unfamiliar to this newbie, it’s a 7 Cost that makes you destroy monsters that add to a total of 8000 or less. So there is some math involved, and it does take some strategy at times to decide which monsters are more crucial to destroy. 8000 is a nice total to have for a budget of destruction. Most monsters used today are 2000, so you take down 4 monsters, which isn’t too bad for 7 mana.

The Good thing about this card is that it has the limit. That limit gives it a wide variety of monsters that it can take down. It right now is one of the only cards in Fire that can destroy monsters like CP, Barkwhip, Lancer and Fighter, which is convenient, since a Wave won’t even scratch these guys.

Let’s check up the greatness of this card.

= The 8000 budget allows more leeway room on which types of monsters can be destroyed. Unlike Searing Wave, Vise can take down stronger monsters, such as Merfolks, Barkwhips, FDFs, Paladins, and Lancers.

= Doesn’t have a drawback like Searing Wave, so you don’t really hurt yourself with its use.

= You get to chose and decide which monsters on the field are better dealt with now and which are better dealt with later.

Now the Negatives.

= 7 Mana is the most expensive of the 3 cards. 7 Mana is fairly difficult to get to, and actually wait for to use this card.

= 8000 does limit the monsters destroyed, so you can destroy 1 FDF, but it then gets no plus over Hopeless Vortex, which is 3 mana less. Wrong Civ, but you get the idea.

= Not a Shield Trigger, so it will not save your life.

= Searing wave will take card of a field of entirely 2000 attackers, no matter how many there are. Vise will only take town 4. Limits…

Apocalypse Vise puts down a nice fight in this battle, but nice enough? There’s still one competitor that we’ve all mostly overlooked greatly. It’s a decent card that we’ve all had for just about a year now. It’s the oldest of the 3 and the middle mana of them as well. Yes, it’s our old friend. Burst Shot.

Burst Shot…Our Hidden Shadow in this war…

burst_shot

Here is our oldest card in our Analysis. Burst Shot. There is no play in this card at all, almost. I haven’t come across this card in any deck with Fire. Is it because people forgot about it, or it just really sucks? Well…I don’t know. I think it does have somewhat potential.

For those who forgot about this card, it’s a 6-cost shield trigger that takes down all 2000 or less monsters. The key word is all. Yes, this puppy actually takes down your monsters as well. Bad, yes, but Red has a new tool that helps it cope with the losses.

Oh, it’s the shield trigger one! That automatically makes it good. Think about it. If used in the right way, it’s like a series of terror pits in 1, which is just great. If your facing 3 Coriles, 3 Surfers, and 3 hulcus, and the first shield they hit is this…wow. Pwned…

Let’s look at the plus sides

- The card takes down all 2000 or less attackers, so it takes care of the most played cards while leaving the 3000 still untouched. Luckily, most 3000 monsters aren’t played.

- It’s a shield trigger! Holy Crap! This card will save your life, and not only that, if you’re being swarmed by small monsters, you have a time bomb ticking away just for them.

- 6 is still a fair price for this card. For the amount of monsters destroyed for the effect, it gains its superiority over Terror Pit in that situation.

The negs, of course…

- Destroys your monsters too. Take a look at your deck. I mean, you’ll have a fair amount of 2000s yourself, so much that it sways your opinion on this card.

- 6 is a *meh* mana cost, where you’re kind of stuck on deciding which card to really use at times.

- 2000 does leave out stuff like Pyrofighter, so you can hit this, yet still leave Pyro unharmed.

- You have to make sure that you’re able to come back from the use of this card. What’s best is having an arsenal of Speed attackers ready in your hand for assault next turn, but that’s just my 2 cents…

And our final card puts his hand into the mix as we finalize the 3. Burst Shot, Apocalypse Vise, and Searing Wave. Which is better?

How Do I feel on this?

Well, I think that Burst Shot has its potential for comebacks, since it hurts your opponent just as much as it hurts you. And it has the shield trigger, so it has lots of Emeral potential. However, I’m still a fan of the Searing Wave. I tried all of these combos, and Vise failed in my deck *too slow*, Burst shot kind of hurt at times, and Searing Wave ultimately about 80% of the time, killed a decent shield trigger. It’s really close to me between two of them, but the way I see it, I like

Searing Wave > Burst Shot > Apocalypse Vise

That’s the way I feel, and I’m sticking to it. Burst Shot is only a little worse than Searing Wave to me, I would be happy using either. Vise is just too slow in my Blue/Red. Not so much slow, but just inconvenient to play to my advantage.

Well. That’s it for my analysis of the 3 Big field clearers in Fire. Now I go back in time to another problem.

The Challenge of Creativity

Now, after 3 weeks past its true release of the winner, plagued by a lack of entries and a Vacation I desperately needed.

The deck I chose as the winner was a deck that emphasized some unique cards that I wanted to see. That’s really what it came down to: to find cards that aren’t really used that much and show them up in an impressive manner. That’s really what this deck did.

The deck was created by…*goes to find name again*…Kirk Matusik!

Kirk created a deck that based itself on Yellow/Green/Red Mana destruct/ power up deck. It had some problem, but it worked really well, utilizing things like the Light blockers ability to attack, Yellows ability to draw strongly, and Green’s speed.

Here’s the Deck he turned in.

4x Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian

4x Magris, Vizier of Magnetism

4x Sarius, Vizier of Suppression

4x La Ura Giga, Sky Guardian

4x Holy Awe

4x Elf-X

4x Bronze-Arm Tribe

4x Poisonous Mushroom

4x Essense Elf

4x Sword of Benevolent Life

4x Cataclysmic Eruption

4x Searing Wave

Sword of benevolent Life was a nice touch to the decks power problem. It adds 1000 power to each monster for every light monster on your side of the field until the end of the turn. You know something is wrong when a Lancer falls to Essence Elf…

Cataclysmic Eruption was another nice touch. As we all know from the past articles, it takes down a mana for each of your nature creatures. I don’t need to tell you how much 2 of these in a row really affects the game.

Overall, I had a great time playing this deck, and will probably continue to use it for a while. For Kirk, E-Mail me as soon as possible to claim your prize…Thanks to everyone who turned in a deck list. Everyone’s deck was very solid and worked very well. Keep at it. Keep this game alive with ingenuity.

And we conclude…. If anyone has a Question, Comment/Concern/Complaint, a reply to a review or Article, or anything about the game of Duel Masters, E-mail me at  nimbly@gmail.com
