Five Dollar Entry Fee

Eighteen Duelists Total
Four Swiss Rounds

Hey guys. I’m back again with another report for your enjoyment. This time we had the strongest turnout in a while with eighteen people. Ramsey Payne and Justin Florio were the only Galactic Quest regulars missing. I got there around noon to play some practice duels and trade like always. I haven’t had much time to test a new deck lately, so my trusty BUG deck got the call yet again. Currently this version is only 1 Hulcus and 3 Awes away from being totally “pimped out” as Lee would say. Here’s the decklist:

Water [19]

3x Emeral (3x JDC)

4x Aqua Hulcus (3x Circuit, 1x McDonalds)

4x Corile (4x TotFC)

4x Illusionary Merfolk

2x Thrash Crawler

2x Energy Stream

Nature [12]

2x Crow Winger

4x Bronze-Arm Tribe (4x Atari)

2x Cryptic Totem

4x Mana Nexus

Darkness [13]

3x Bloody Squito

4x Locomotiver (4x JDC)

4x Terror Pit (4x Circuit)

2x Lost Soul

Light [04]

4x Holy Awe (1x TotFC)

Total: 48 Cards
Mana Curve: 4.16

Justin Couch, who normally runs the tournies, showed up late today. So Slack and Lee Sandow (back from college for Labor Day) spent half an hour trying to figure out how to run the computer standings before they gave up. We finally started around 1:30 using good old pencil and paper pairings. My first opponent was none other than Matt, who I’ve been having some nasty luck against ever since our first Circuit.

Round One: Vs. Matt Gracek (Blue/Black/Green)

Matt is one of the others here who also runs three color control. His playing style really bugs me sometimes, because Matt will just sit there and make the best plays without showing any emotion whatsoever. Let’s see how round one goes...

He managed to pull off my worst fear in the form of a turn-5 Merfolk hitting the board. The game quickly went downhill, as Matt easily controlled the board. In the end I had no chance of stopping his Cryptic Totem swarm. The next game, however, was all mine. I won after a long battle, only about 6 cards remaining in deck. In the final battle we went down the wire. Both of us had very nice shields set, but once again Matt cast Totem before me. A tough loss to start the day.

Record: 1-2

Cumulative Record: 0-1 matches, 1-2 duels

His key cards: Illusionary Merfolk, Cryptic Totem, Corile

Round Two: Vs. Daniel Seghers (Blue/Green/Splash)

You may recognize the name because Daniel is also a CotD reviewer on Pojo.com. He told us all about having to evacuate Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina, and how he ended up in Georgia. I was glad Daniel could make it to GQ even under the not so great circumstances.  Lee randomly paired us up for round two, and I had no idea what he was playing before the match.

In the first duel we started off with about 5 Aqua Hulcus combined. Daniel did a good job of maintaining field and hand presence despite my best attempts to take control. I can not recall what exactly happened, but by turn ten he won, simply having more creatures than I did shields. The next duel everything went much more smoothly. I pulled of numerous Merfolk, Corile, Loco, etc. to take game two. Our final match was close down to the end. He nearly caught me off guard, but I made the right call going for the win just before Daniel would have killed me. A fun matchup.

Record: 2-1

Cumulative Record: 1-1 matches, 3-3 duels

His key cards: Aqua Hulcus, Bronze-Arm Tribe, Holy Awe

Round Three: Vs. Stephan Slack (Black/Yellow/Blue)

Slack decided to play Hydro Hurricane today, which he does for fun every now and then. Earlier today I pwned him 2-0, but this match would be a different story...

Game one was all mine. Slack at one point played Marinomancer, which met my Corile the next turn. He decides to play it again, drawing three cards and opening up his huge hand to meet Lost Soul. Fairly easy win so far. But then the frustration begins. In our next game Slack discarded Merfolk out of my hand THREE DIFFERENT TIMES when I would have played it the next turn. Everything fell apart from there, as he summoned several blockers then decked me out. The final duel was strangely similar. But instead of killing my Merfolk right before I could play them, he smashed Emeral and Corile instead. Did I mention how frustrating that can be?

Record: 1-2

Cumulative Record: 1-2 matches, 4-5 duels

His key cards: Horrid Worm, Phal Eega, Marinomancer

Round Four: Vs. Christy Smith (Red/Black Rush)

Before this round I was too busy shuffling and must have forgotten to take Christy’s picture. This is first time we’ve battled in a tourny. She rooms with Jason Marcella, and I believe he introduced her to DM a couple months ago. Christy placed Top 4 in 15+ with this deck at the last Circuit event, giving me reason to worry.

The first duel ended after about two minutes. She went Deadly Fighter, Kamikaze, Rikabu, Pyrofighter to finish me off on turn four. Craptacular way to start a match, eh? The next two duels were much better though. I survived past turn five, giving me ample time to secure the field. She still put up one heck of a fight though, namely giving me grief with Horrid Worm. Cryptic Totem ended the final game in my favor.

Record: 2-1

Cumulative Record: 2-2 matches, 6-6 duels

Her key cards: Deadly Fighter, Horrid Worm, Pyrofighter Magnus

The Aftermath: So this week put an end to my streak of good tournaments. The day did end on a high note though, getting that last victory, meeting Daniel, and even learning a little about how to play this deck in future matches. Tyler Smallwood finished in first place using my spare UBR that he borrowed. Matt Gracek and Stephen Fordham came up 2nd and 3rd, both using BUG as well. September 10th marks the start of my soccer season, so I won’t be making tournies as often.

To the best of my knowledge, about eight of us from Team GQ will be making the trip to Nationals in Los Angeles on October 28-30th. Stephen Fordham and I won the two paid flights from our Circuit events. Stephen Slack, Lee Sandow, Jason Marella, Christy Smith, David Fordham, and Matt Gracek will also be going. That gives us a solid representation of 4 in each division. I’m really looking forward to it, as the event will probably be my last and I want to go out on top.

Props:

- This new 10 year old named Lucas pwned Lee with mono Fire

- DM is thriving here at Galactic Quest

- Not that DCI matters, but I’m still hanging on to first in GA

Slops:

- Terrible pulls lately from my prize packs

- Eight place not my best effort, but still broke even record-wise

- Traded away too much to get Foil Hulcus ‘n Awe

That’ll wrap up another report. My name is Steven Cantrell, and you can catch me on AIM or email at Smcman7@aol.com anytime. I’m usually open to practice duels (not with DMC) right after school everyday and on the weekends. Till next time...
