Exclusive Clash of the Duel Masters Preview Card

I am happy to share with Pojo readers an exclusive preview card from Clash of the Duel Masters! This new card has the potential to be played competitively, or at worst, a one-of.

Slumbering Titan

Level: 6

Type: Colossus

Civilization: Nature

Rules Text:

Double Breaker (This creature breaks 2 shields.) Wake the Mountain -- If an opponent’s spell or ability would cause you to discard this creature, you may put it into the battle zone instead.

Power: 6,000

Flavor Text:

“Don’t worry about Megaria. I’ve got a special present ready for her this time. --Master Kimora

Slumbering Titan packs a lighter punch compared to other Colossi in the Kaiju Realm. Thankfully, 6,000 power is enough to avoid power-based destruction spells, and go toe-to-toe with mid game finishers or blockers. The possibility of breaking two shields is standard fare for a level six Nature creature, but should not be overlooked. Sadly, evolutions and dragons will have no problem sending a newly awakened Slumbering Titan to an early grave.

Continuing the trend of abilities introduced in DragonStrike Infernus that affect cards in a player’s hand, Slumbering Titan may enter the battle zone via special means. When its aptly named ability triggers, a player can summon Slumbering Titan for no cost. Situational at best, but Wake the Mountain provides an indirect counter to discard shenanigans of the Darkness civilization. Making an opponent second-guess playing Razorkinder Puppet or Skull Shatter is definitely an added bonus.

Three copies of Slumbering Titan would work nicely with the drawing capabilities of the Water civilization. Cycling through the deck may lead to a copy for future use. Biding time by holding onto the card will allow Wake the Mountain to occur naturally. One could forcefully activate the discard ability of an enemy creature. For example, banishing Ghost Spy, risky but doable. Not an optimal game plan by any means--roundabout ways of playing a card are usually not worthwhile. An ideal circumstance, especially during the early game, is if an opponent casts Specter Claw or attacks with Gigastand. The threat of a double breaker during the first few turns is great for applying pressure. Otherwise, charge Slumbering Titan into the mana zone and opt for a better play.

Clash of the Duel Masters introduces multi-civilization creatures and many cards with unique abilities. The upcoming set will add an extra layer of strategy, encouraging new decks and updates to older archetypes. I personally hope to see more support for less popular creature types. Wild Veggies, anyone?
