					Breaking the Curve

						In one of my previous articles I wrote about the death 
						of yugioh due to broken cards and combos that have led 
						the game’s future into being dependant on what cards are 
						being banned instead of what new cards are released. In 
						a really good set, MAYBE 2-3 cards will see consistent 
						play. So how far away is Vs from entering that form of 
						brokenness? Lets take a look. 
						 
						I am generally a curve player more than a tech player, 
						so I favor the straightforward, smash mouth play, but in 
						a world of tech, the straight at ‘em curve decks have 
						been outmoded. The only exceptions to these are decks 
						that can lay the smack down hard and fast such as curve 
						sentinels and brotherhood, but these decks have ways of 
						insane power boosting. And for those that have a few 
						savage beatdowns thrown in all, the better. 
						 
						Tech decks will rule the metagame in most every game 
						created. Its started with people that find obscure 
						combos and make real their often-paralyzing effects.  
						 
						These are the Dr Light/gamma bombs, cosmic cops and 
						certain stall decks. To beat these with a curve deck you 
						need an awesome draw, them to have a semi poor draw, and 
						the ability to capitalize on every chance that presents 
						itself. One miss played move or choking up a point or 
						two of breakthrough can mean losing the game. 
						 
						I just came off a very bad weekend at the local tourney. 
						I was running my Brave and the Bold deck (my first real 
						foray into the tech side). Gotham Knights is my favorite 
						team as it is hefty beatdown that rarely misses a drop 
						outside of the opening drops. 
						 
						Round one: I ran into a cosmic cops deck. I thought 
						maybe I would have a chance when on turn four I cleaned 
						out his entire field, but since it is also a weenie deck 
						it bounced back in a hurry. He started drawing, turned 
						it on me and I was crushed by a 23/23 batman. Round 
						three: I met a gamma bomb deck. I had him down to four 
						endurance, but couldn’t get the leg up I needed and he 
						blew me up. It was a very frustrating weekend ending 
						1-3. 
						 
						My point to this is, beat downs will almost always lose 
						without an insane pumping ability somewhere. So is Vs 
						going the way of yugioh and being lost to tech decks? 
						Not really, no. Vs. has something yugioh never really 
						had-diversity. Out of the highly competitive decks, 
						Sentinels, Titans, Brotherhood, Gamma bomb, cosmic cops 
						and more that I’m forgetting, all can hold their own 
						against each other. So while tech may always dominate, 
						diversity is well and good.  
						Especially since the new sets are adding new teams all 
						the time, there will always be something new.
