Shukaku [Devastation]
#N-998

Reviewed Dec. 13, 2010

Average Card Rating

Limited: 2.50
Unlimited: 2.17
Block: 3.33

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale.
1 being the worst.
3 = average.
5 is the highest rating.

Beastly Mage

Shukaku

Today's card marks the return of the One-Tailed Raccoon Spirit: Shukaku. This Tailed-Beast fits very well with the Wind/Surge theme. At turn 7 it has the highest turn cost of any Surge Ninja. Note that it has the "Name: Gaara of the Desert" Characteristic. Since Gaara [Conversation] got reprinted as a Black and Gold not long ago, using this guy is easier (Conversation + the most recent Sand Cocoon). Now, when Shukaku's  team wins any Victory your opponent moves two cards from the hand to the top of the deck in any order. So, your opponent must make a choice when facing Shukaku and has no chance of winning: either fork over an Outstanding Battle Reward, or have a Ninja take at least one damage and have to wait a while longer to set up that good hand. Moving from the hand to the top of the deck is one good way to make your opponent wait longer. Take my word on it.

Shukaku n998

This tenacious tanuki trickily teases terrified teams.

In Block, you trick him out on Turn 2 with Gaara of the Desert n145. In Unlimited, Set 12 Playing Possum Jutsu doubles your chances of tricking him out, not to mention he uses Sand Tomb. In Limited, this guy is late-game Hand Control on a big stick. The only trouble with him is going through the trouble of squeezing at least 8 cards into your deck, 6 being Super Rare, just to have a decent chance of getting this guy out early. If you can fit 3 of a Turn 2, 3 of a Wind Turn 7, and 2 or 3 of a jutsu that is sub-par outside of this combo, this guy has no real downside.

Limited: 3/5 This guy seems like a bomb in limited

Unlimited (Constructed): 2/5 I was a fan of cheating Shukaku into play since Set 10, when they made a good one.

Block: 4/5 Depending on what else Wind gets (especially in terms of Jutsus for this big fellow), he could bust Block wide open.

Julio

Shukaku

I am such a fan of this card. Even then, this card does carry its flaws:
-It's a late entry onto the field
-average attack
-effect isn't valid

It still isn't such a bad card though. It creates an endless loop that wont let your opponent get out of unless he/she just lets the attack go unblocked. It's unlikely that this card will get surge'd due to it being late game. This card fits in a Wind Surge deck and easily splashed into any other deck that carries wind. This card may not see play during tournaments but Chiyo [sacrifice] sure helps the odds.  It's missing the usually "unaffected by your opponent's effects" effect so it doesn't exactly make it the best Shukaku out in the game.
[Formidable Monster], in my opinion, is the best Shukaku but, if we are following the block format, this will have to do.

It's too bad...I love the way this card looks.

Block: 2/5
looks cool at least but not likely to hit the field and much less of a chance to surge it its not likely to pull off the effect and if it does end up in a showdown it can't protect itself

Unlimited: 1/5
there are better Shukaku cards out
